Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
I just received a letter from a Spanish publisher who would like to acquire the Spanish translation rights of my Crystal Shade trilogy. I'm surprised because the release of the first volume is still months away. But every progress is a progress, right? So here we go with an almost silent squeee!!!

Re: Silly things we think about
Which book actually begins: "it was a dark and stormy night"? My next one. :D Okay. No. It's Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Paul Clifford. This is the full opening... It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents—except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
And a little fun for today. Today, this art about the main character of my fantasy novel Crystal Shade has reached the stars for the second time, this time aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis (Minus text and logos).

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
I am beyond excited to announce that I have just signed a contract on my NOVEL! The contract is from a small press that does both digital and print, so it will be released within a year as an e-book and then as a paperback a month or so later. Still hasn't sunk in---I think I'll go pass out now. Co...

Re: Pale Moonlight - Noir opening (1st edition)
I have to say I can't agree with your statement that it's good for the reader to feel cheated. Surprised, transported, even pleasingly deceived, great. Surprising, transporting, deceiving are all different forms of cheating the readers. I also think it is a completely separate issue from imagery. I...

Re: Pale Moonlight - Noir opening (1st edition)
Thanks Matt. Here are my answers... I'd pick one, ugly or angry Both stays. I love modifiers. Those thingies are my trademark and my readers love them. :) Generally speaking, I think it is hard to pull off 'tricks' like this without risking annoying your reader. I wish I could remember the publishin...

Pale Moonlight - Noir opening (1st edition)
I'd like to hear some opinion regarding the opening of my short, not so serious Noir story which plays in 1936. Pale Moonlight (Part of the short story collection, 7 Post Meridiem) By Istvan Szabo, Ifj. The silver knife glints in the dim light as the sharp edge cuts deeper and deeper into the soft, ...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
The 50th fan has just joined to follow the humble fanpage of my little fantasy trilogy. Considering the odds and other novel fanpages, It's a pretty good number for a novel which will be released only in November (Especially as I haven't started any sort of marketing campaign at all.).

Re: Fair use policy and cross referenceses in novels
My mistake. I thought you referenced the Popeye screenplays, not the comic strip. No problem. I also believed I must ask permission from Time Warner or Warner Bros, but my editor looked after it and she told me King Features Syndicate has the overall rigths. but once it's done it's a comforting fee...

Re: Fair use policy and cross referenceses in novels
Quill. It seems Polymath and I was right regarding the Fair Use Policy. At least regarding Popeye. I asked King Features Syndicate and they already responded in this matter... Just mentioning the characters (Popeye and Olive Oyl) in a novel, story etc can be done without permission. Permission is on...
