Biting my nails here
Just sent my MS off to my first real beta reader. My baby is out there in the world for someone else to read. (Granted, I have sent parts out there for feedback a couple times, but this is the first entire MS beta crit that I'll likely get back.) I'm nervous. But looking forward to getting that fres...

Re: Narrative time
I should say this isn't YA. There are definite relationship issues, but they're more related to adult relationships. I figure an older audience could handle the larger time span. But I'm still worried about it.
Thanks for all the input everyone.

Re: Narrative time
I probably don't show enough. I counted. And out of those 4 years, 1 week, 2 1/2 days, I show 43 of them. It's a challenge. One which I don't know how to overcome. I like the idea of parts, but I do agree that it can be jarring. I will confess I'd never thought about character change in the long spa...

Narrative time
What's y'all's opinions on length of time a book covers? I'm struggling with this issue right now as I launch into revisions of my urban/contemp. fantasy. The book currently covers a time frame of just over 4 years. The majority of the book takes place nearly at the end of that span. The book starts...

Re: Huck Finn Gets Some Changes
I could barely get through Huck Finn, but that doesn't mean I agree with the censoring of it.
It just didn't grab me. But everyone deserves freedom of speech, even those gone before whose words live on.

Re: Favourite characters' names?
I loved the nickname Silk from David Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean series. It just summed up the character in one word. Tamora Pierce's Alanna. I'd love to name a daughter that. Or Keladry. I just like names that are pronouncable, look semi-normal, and flow off the tongue. Like Varyen, from one o...

Re: How do you deal with thoughts?
I use italics. If you're consistent in how you set off the internal thought/monologue, you'll give your reader a visual cue so they'll know what they're dealing with as they go and don't get caught up on the how of what's being communicated.
