Re: Thieves and ignorance.

It’s theft! Sure it is. No one is saying it isn't. How do you propose to change the behavior of people who download recent books? I'd say any effort to change behavior is a futile one. She deserves the money from her sales. Nobody has a right to take it from her. If she's good writer she deserves l...

Re: Thieves and ignorance.

Sounds like she wrote a good book. Good for her that people like it. It'd be kind of nice if she could make a living from it too, don't you think? It'd be nice if I could make a living playing my kazoo; I can't so I have a day job. Most writers have day jobs. Maybe she has one. I would direct atten...

Re: Thieves and ignorance.

I don't know anything about this writer or her book, but I can make a few guesses about her situation from her blog post: -She's with a major publisher and not an independent -She doesn't appreciate having readers that have read and presumably enjoyed her book via downloading it -She believes that r...

Belief: Reading makes you smarter

I don't believe reading makes you smarter.

I know too many smart people who don't give a damn about books.

What say you?

Re: Content appropriateness in YA books?

Is your book a comedy? I can't tell from your descriptions.

There really is no such thing as appropriate or inappropriate books, just good and bad ones.

Write a good one.

Re: Forum pages

Hi Nathan, Can you increase the number of responses that appear per page per topic to either 15 or 20? Some of these threads are getting good and long, and displaying only 10 responses per page makes for a lot of clicking. My hands get sore. Also FYI; the http://nathanbransford.com/ main page of yo...

A GAME OF THRONES by George R. R. Martin

Only a few chapters in, but already there's some hints at sex and some cursing, which makes this better than the Tolkien I read as a kid. Thinking of adding R. R. initials to my name.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

The DIY ethos : Part 1 I noticed other Important Bloggers create series of posts. It's a tactic to sucker you into coming back to a site each week for updates. It works, so I started one, a weekly series on DIY. This first post is a rather boring history; the rest of the series will be full of exci...

CTRL+A+DEL

Do this to everything you write, then write it again.

Your second go around will be much better.

Re: Offering e-books with hard copies

This is a great idea.

Independent record companies are doing this because of the resurgence in sales of vinyl records. Inside a lot of records these days is a coupon with a code where you can go to a website and download the digital album tracks for free.

Re: How Strange Can a Novel Be?

Make the jackalope talk. That's the key. I recently finished TH White's THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING. If you haven't read it, you should. It's 4 books on the King Arthur legend, and the strangeness of the book/plot/narration/etc. is apparent, glaring, and great. It's a real mess and damn entertaining. G...

THE SAVAGE DETECTIVES by Roberto Bolano

File this one as another "young adult novel adults don't want young adults to read." A bunch of hyper smart teenage poets drift around Mexico City, get in arguments, and fight off sexual tension.

Movie: The Ghost Writer

If you haven't seen it, check out THE GHOST WRITER. It's a movie about a guy who ghosts books; he writes books with famous people for a living, and he gets hired to write the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister. Ewan McGregor plays the writer, Pierce Brosnan plays the PM, and they're great. L...
