I hear what you're saying Coach, and re-reading it, I think I can flesh it out a bit.
In regards to the age of the MC, it's intended to reflect a more innocent age. 14 and 15 year olds are too emotional and prone to gothic tendencies. It cheapens the effect.

Re: New Manuscript - What do you think of this style?
augh! can't write anymore today. I think it's the madness of waiting that's keeps me typing. I wanted some feed back on the style because I didn't want to have to go back and change the tone after it's finished. (Had to for certain pieces of the current manuscript; that really sucked.) I don't know ...

New Manuscript - What do you think of this style?
I started my new book yesterday and got about 1/8th of the way through the rough draft (13,000 words so far; I've had the idea forever and I hope to finish by the end of April). It's a YA paranormal novel (not romance), and the protagonist twelve. It's a different writing style than my last book, so...

Re: Why do you reread books?
A combination of laziness to find new treasures and a limited budget. The second time around always reveals someone the first time missed. =)

Re: Good Books - Bad Endings
I actually liked the way The Lovely Bones ended. It's very realistic, with none of the fanciful the-rapist-got-caught idea. But I definitely agree about the Animorphs. It was the first series I finished, and I gave up sci-fi after that. I felt so bad the the kid-turned-hawk. Not a bad ending, but it...

Re: Question about manuscript readers
@ Margo: any chance I can mooch some of your time? =D @ Lorelei: Maybe it's the area, but the average person here doesn't seem to read much. Most of them have never heard of Ibsen, Camus, and some went as far as to not know who Agatha Christie was. Then there are those who, like Ink said, would rath...

Re: Ask Nathan
Hi nathan!
Another quick question: If I have a manuscript out there with an agent, can I/ should I still query other agents while waiting?
Thank you.

Re: Query and Book Proposal...Getting and Evaluating Feedback
Maybe I should have explained myself better. What I was trying to say was that the letter could be even tighter. At certain places, it turned into a namedropping contest. For example: "It started in 1996 when the successful private investigator, was double-crossed by his employee, Max Caulfield...

Re: Query and Book Proposal...Getting and Evaluating Feedback
hmm.... old thread's come back to life. Let me take a stab. Overall impression: Better. I'm actually curious about this. Improve: too many people. I got confused, especially by the alternating names referring to the same person, and the different connections As I'm not familiar with the memoir proce...

Re: Question about manuscript readers
From the sounds of it, I should find some working adults to edit my manuscript, but where would be a good place to look for local critique groups? I've tried to look Craig's list, but it said we didn't have any within bus distance. My last English teacher (and this due to sheer bad luck) happened to...

Question about manuscript readers
After much thought, I've decided that two things are true about all writers. 1) At least once a week, we have something else we should be doing, but are not because we're editing their manuscripts. 2) We're all very lonely people, as no one wants to talk about our manuscript with us because they hav...

Re: Replying to a rejection?? Any thoughts on this?
The short answer: yes. The long answer: Put yourself in their shoes. Imagine large blobs of people constantly vying for your attention everyday, each with a couple hundred pages of writing for you to read. Naturally, it's easier to pick a few that interests you, but since you don't know any of these...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?
When I first saw this topic a few weeks ago, I thought "not applicable to self" and moved on. But today, sincerely, I want to say thanks. I've been mass-editing my manuscript (again... it's already been a year and a half...) and it's already been a week since the request. For a moment I wa...

Re: SftOS - Help Revise Please? First Pages driving me crazy
sorry, I should have specified. The point after the dot-dot-dot is what her manuscript is about. The last action in the (now prologue) was of her flipping through her manuscript @ emily J: you make good point. my original word was "nerd" not scholar, but I thought that might be insulting @...

SftOS - Help Revise Please? First Pages driving me crazy
No matter how many times I read it, I can never form a set impression. On good days, I like it. On bad days, I wonder why I ever wrote it. This is one of those bad days, so I thought I'd get some help from you guys. -- Prologue When the police arrived, I told them I’d missed the merge sign. I even c...
