Re: Scrivener and Windows Alternatives

I've tried various writing software packages such as yWriter - I just can't get the hang of them: too many shiny things available (character descriptions! storyboards!) that I ended up spending all my time with the add-ons and no time with the novel. So for now I'm stuck with the 2-doc approach - on...

Re: Have your blog reading/commenting habits changed?

I've been blogging for a few years now, but I've never really fallen in love with blogs. They feel like lots of people in lots of different rooms (some padded and lockable) having lots of conversations with themselves. A few blogs are more like meeting halls where dozens can gather to listen to a se...

Re: Authonomy: The Future of publishing?

Some interesting insights, Pete, though I'm not so sure I'd agree with the blanketness of the condemnations.

Read your opening chapter, btw.

Re: Have we talked about world building?

My only problem with worldbuilding is that I don't know when to stop.

This is what happens when worldbuilding takes over your life.

Seriously, don't talk to me about maps! Seasons can go by before I remember that I'm supposed to be, you know, writing a novel.

Nathan - thank you.

I think I shall move you to the very top of my Most Wanted Agents list once my next tome is honed to query perfection (but please don't tell Kristin).

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?

Tolkein, probably. Though I remember re-reading The Wind in the Willows a number of times when I was a kid, just in case the words changed between readings. I've developed a recent taste for re-reading Tim Powers' later books. It took me eight attempts to read Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros , but it w...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I've been busy publishing my poems.

Don't be scared: they're only poems!

There's going to be a lot more poetry on my blog during April. For April is NaPoWriMo month, when chickens are sacrificed to the Muses in the hope of wringing out just one more strophe ... please!

Re: Authonomy: The Future of publishing?

I've been on Authonomy (on and off) since last July. Whatever it is, it's not the future of publishing. Also, it's not a good place to get useful feedback on any draft novel - unless you make an effort to seek out those few people who are willing to give good critical feedback; most of the comments ...

Re: About iPad

I've been iffy about wanting an iPad - my mobile (cell) phone remains resolutely steam-powered.

Then I saw this ... it looks like I'm going to have to cut down on non-essentials, like food, and start saving my pennies.

Re: Editing as you go: really that bad?

I revise the previous day's writing before moving on to creating the new stuff. It's the only way I can get into my characters' heads without having to live with the little blighters 24/7.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I've been blogging recently about the processes of self-pubbing (yawn) - the results of which can be seen in my siggy link.

Far more interesting may be this recent post where I answer some questions about conlanging.

Re: Self publish, print on demand or get an agent?

There's a couple of old posts on Nathan's blog where he talks about self-publishing - maybe it's time for another post, particularly as agent Rachelle Gardner has been talking about it recently ? The key question I think you need to ask is: what do you want to achieve from publishing the book? - if ...
