Re: Are Most Authors Women?
've noticed that most of the authors I read and meet on the internet are women. Does anyone else notice this? You're right, there are a lot of women writers on-line. I think it might be more a matter of communication styles rather than a disparity in the gender of writers, though. We women like to ...

Re: Bransford Blog Bracket Challenge!!!
Somebody unleashed their inner editor on my bracket. The whole right side is marked up in pink with strike-throughs everywhere. I don't think that's good.

Green eggs and ham for all!
BTW, I used to cook green eggs for my son when he was younger in honor of Dr. Seuss. Not really that appetizing when you think about it, though. :(

Re: What Gender is Your Writing Style?
I Let's just say you ooze confidence, Margo. Very brawny of you. *grin* 0_o Uh. Well. Hmmm. I... There are a LOT of ways that could be interpreted. It's like those verification words we have to type in on blogs to verify we aren't a spambot before we can comment. Half the time it sounds like the co...

Re: What Gender is Your Writing Style?
Hmmm, I tried it with a sample of both fiction and non-fiction and it predicted I was a female both times. My scores were within twenty points of each other - male/female. But I know I have been mistaken for a man on-line before. It's kind of odd the way they break down certain words as male and fem...
Re: DIVERGENT
I tried twice to win an ARC from Janet Reid on her blog, and only managed one honorable mention with my contest entry. Drat!
I want that book!
(and, yes, I have a tattoo)

Re: What have your characters taught you?
So...surely I'm not the only person who has gotten advice from her own characters? Not advice exactly, but I know I'd be crazier than I am if I didn't write. We get to explore a lot of emotions on the page as writers, and if we're self-aware enough we might learn a thing or two about who we really ...

Re: Connecting With Characters
Down the well, have you read Fire in Fiction? Oh my, yes. I read the book last spring and then went to the workshop. But your question prompted me to pull the book out again. Lo and behold, I found some old pages from my WIP tucked away in the back of the book that I had forgotten about. Reading th...

Re: Connecting With Characters
Well, I actually wasn't talking specifically about my WIP, just talking in generalities, but now that you mention it I guess I did have one agent use that excuse for rejecting me, lol. Subjectivity is of course a factor in anything to do with artistic expression. Making changes based on one opinion ...

Re: Connecting With Characters
A person that you identify with that will carry you through the book and be your avatar, so to speak, in that world. A small add-on; a person that you identify, but you don't have to identify yourself to be that character, but the MC can be familiar to someone that you know, a friend, family member...

Connecting With Characters
I'm curious to know what it takes for you to get invested in a character when you read. Is it a matter of identifying with the character or their struggle? Or do you look for someone to root for (or against)? Why do you care what happens to the main character in a novel? And do you feel that attachm...

I agree about The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The style was too journalistic for my taste.
I had some traveling to do this week and picked up Tinkers by Paul Harding to read on the plane. Wow. Now that was some beautiful writing.

Re: Habit: skipping parts or passages in a novel
"Low-brow and subversive" literature, Margo. That's what the people were clamoring for, LOL. Personally, it has nothing to do with a book being literary or commercial when I find myself skimming. I enjoy both and read both, but it's usually about flow, or pacing, or superfluous fluff that ...
