Re: New Query: THE ENEMY WITHIN (Historical Fiction)
When her father is murdered by Union soldiers in 1862 Kentucky, nineteen-year-old Julienne Dalton is left an orphan with a ruined horse farm. She struggles to restore the family’s thoroughbred business, but when the opportunity to join a ring of Confederate agents arises, she gladly seizes it. Help...

Re: When do you revise your MS?
Times like these you have to follow what you think is right. Were those doubts about your MS there all along and did this finally yank it out? See, I think this is it. There is a key moment when our protagonist figured out who didn't do it. In one fell-swoop the red herrings were gone, leaving only...

Re: Chances are, you won't get rich.
'We all dream of this kind of a boon.' Do we? Chances are you won't get rich in any endeavor. But people do. If quiet, literary, pretty customary and run of the mill is what you aspire to, you may get it, but are unlikely to get more. I strive to avoid either reading or writing quiet, literary, pre...

When do you revise your MS?
Hi All, So I've only been querying agents for my historical mystery for a couple of weeks now and so far, so good. Twelve queries, three requests for partials, two fulls, one form rejection. I just received a very brief rejection on one of my fulls. :( The explanation was that while the agent liked ...

Chances are, you won't get rich.
I imagine this has already been discussed here, but I came across a blog post that breaks down the (sobering) numbers for those of us who think that writing is a way out of their crappy job. Full post is http://mandyhubbard.livejournal.com/249542.html?thread=2474182 , but here is most of it. -------...

Re: Rejection Stats
Ready to puke here. One of the agents who requested a partial liked what I sent, and asked for a full. She's said she'll have an answer for me on Monday. Hoo-boy. I'm not surprised at all. I remember your query. Your novel sounds really cool. Good luck! And that is a really fast turn around. I wish...

Re: First Person Synopsis
Agree with DTW (as always!). The one suggestion I would offer is that you try writing it "in character" as it were. How would your protagonist describe it in the third person? I found that early drafts of my synopsis seemed clinical, and even the most critical plot points lacked drama. The...

Okay, chopped a plot line and jazzed up the lingo to make it less of a "And then, and then, and then," and more suspenseful as I hope the book is. Also just got a request for a synopsis and a partial, so the stakes just went up! ------------------------------ It is 1644, and Parliament’s a...

Re: Panic at the finish line approaches
As I sit here, I feel panic welling up inside and I'm on the verge of tears. I don't know if I'm afraid of the coming rejection, suddenly having doubts about the quality of my work, or both... Has anyone else felt this way? I can relate one hundred percent. I got a full request from a recent pitch ...

Panic at the finish line approaches
Hey, topic #1000! Anyway, I'm within shouting distance of wrapping up my final (for now) revision and polish of my WIP. (I know it will likely need more work, but I'm this close to sending out queries. As I sit here, I feel panic welling up inside and I'm on the verge of tears. I don't know if I'm a...

Re: Nominate Your Query for a Critique on the Blog
Dear Mr. Bransford, It is 1644, and Parliament’s armies have risen against the King and laid siege to the city of York. Even as the city suffers at the rebels’ hands, midwife Bridget Hodgson becomes embroiled in a different sort of rebellion. One of Bridget’s friends, Esther Cooper, has been convict...
