Re: Purchasing your own domain name?
Unless you want to spend the money (or time) developing a site, I think the easiest thing is to turn your blog into your website. It cuts down on time since you're at one site. I used to design websites (for super computer illiterate folks who wanted something done cheap) for a low fee using WYSIWYG...

Re: Title Confusion
Thanks for the compliment, Polymath. Coming from you, it's pretty huge. :-) Although forgive me, but I must correct you about the British siding with the South. They did initially, allowing a Confederate ambassador into the country to plead the Cause. The Trent Affair, of course, drew more sympathy ...

Re: Title Confusion
I think I like just "Brookfield" since it is a pivotal part of Julienne's story. But I don't if it would grab me if I was perusing the bookstore. Oh how I want to go with "Brookfield Betrayal"...even though it's cheesy as h*ll! It reminds me of my first novel (written when I was ...

Re: Title Confusion
Thanks for the feedback everyone! My apologies for taking so long to come back and check it out. While I think that THE ENEMY WITHIN is applicable, I've wondered that based on first impressions, when I write an e-mail with the subject QUERY: THE ENEMY WITHIN, that perhaps an agent is getting the wro...

Re: Anyone up for a Meet 'n' Greet?
I've got to be an A. If I'm able to swing the time off from work and the money for the trip, I will most likely come in on Wednesday the 7th and leave on Friday the 9th.
And we definitely need a t-shirt!

Title Confusion
Oh dear, oh dear... I just found out that there is a sci-fi book out there (represented by an agent I was planning on querying) with the same title as mine. Um, what to do? I'm not particularly attached to my title, but I honestly have a hard time coming up with titles (my hubby usually supplies me ...

I get shaky too, Charlee. When I found out about my full, I couldn't even dial the phone to share the good news my hands were shaking so hard. When the light bulb goes off for my writing projects, I usually just shout (as long as I'm not in a public place). I think I was driving when I finally figur...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
No Ma'am. I'm not being sarcastic at all. I can't be called a Southerner (mores the pity), but I grew up in the South. One place I lived, a little town called Brownsville, TN, has a few well kept, still occupied antebellum homes - none of them is a plantantion home but they are complete with hidey ...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
OK, here are a few (very quick) comments before I go back to work. :-( Aimee -- very interesting opening. I'd definitely read on. glg -- I remember either reading your query or your synopsis this one and thought it sounded like a fun read. I understand what you're trying to do with the dialogue, but...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
IMO, I think "the slaves had retired" is fine, because I read it as from the perspective of a young rich girl, and I didn't think she'd quite understand what kind of life the slaves lead. I agree with Sierra - that phrasing makes her sound naive, but I feel it's intentional. (I don't pers...

Re: What's My Name Again?
I think the name is very important. A name can evoke so many ideas, thoughts, emotions...for good and bad. It's a major identifier, IMO. In fact, I find that I'm less attached to a character when I don't know their name right off the bat. As someone else suggested, get it out in dialogue. My charact...

Re: 250 Word Sharathon--post the opening of your WIP
Well geez, folks, I disappear for a few days to move and start a new job and y'all are having all the fun without me. The 250 below are from my completed manuscript that I'm flogging to agents. I quickly scanned some of the earlier posts and it was enough incentive for me to withhold the first 250 f...

Re: Setting Usernames for Author pages
I totally agree with Collectonian. I don't want the people who like me as an author to know about my personal beliefs, comings and goings, etc. But it's more of a "I don't want to send a friend request to an author who doesn't know me from Adam" type of thing. Even though you can see who l...
