Re: The end of the "celebrity author"?

19! You are ahead of the game if you start now. We live in the era of the Overnight Sensation but there really isn't such a thing unless you are talking about someone earning the Darwin Award. As someone who has put in my 10,000 hours and million-word apprenticeship, I'd just say...stop worrying abo...

Re: Launch PartAY!/Some things I've learned...

Just a few days until the Launch Party. Here are a few things I've learned over the past few weeks. People are stoked that the party is at a bar and on the weekend. Bourbon and a fireplace makes everything better. Writing Press Releases sucks. Sending out Press Releases sucks even more because it br...

E-books have mass.

Interesting article...but don't scientist have other things to do? Things that benefit humanity.

Re: Enlisting the services of an editor

Depends on your definition of "Editing." If you just want her to read and give onetime feedback then maybe a few drinks and dinner would be fine. If you want her with you for the long haul of working out rough spots and and in-depth stirring of the pot then payment would be in order. Some ...

Re: Which Cover?

Ahhhhh...those are watermarks. My uncle has some great photos from the Southwest. He may "lend" you one to use for a cover. You might work your Veteran status with him. ;) http://hitzeman.zenfolio.com/ If you are designing those covers yourself, consider posting an ad on Craigslist or putt...

Re: Which Cover?

A good exercise is to shrink the book cover into a thumbnail size you'd see on Amazon or B&N or anywhere else online and see if you can still get an idea of what the book is about at a glance. Good luck! This is good advice from Sommer but remember that you can upload a different more abbreviat...

Re: Which Cover?

If I had to pick one, I'd say number one. Agree with the lighting comment. Too much going on in number two. Throughout the creative process whether it be writing, video, etc, I'm always amazed at how less is more. Even with my latest round of promo-postcard design, I still ended up whittling away at...

Re: Book Country

The name Book Country makes me think of a used car dealership complete with a fast talking round guy trying to rip you off.

Couldn't they come up with a better name like Book Barn, Book Mill, Book Ville, or Book Factory?

Re: Not letting an audience know what's in a novel.

Word of mouth buzz cannot be jump started by a producer. Nicely said Polymath. It's hard to find the line sometimes. As we try to get the word out on our books, we have to remind ourselves to be patient and not do anything that will offend, seem tacky, or fall into the "trying too hard" c...

Re: Launch PartAY!

Thanks Mira. Things are moving along. Just sent a few press releases and pitches out to newspapers and am drumming up names of friends of friends of friends.... My old locker partner from 8th grade moved out this way and found me on Facebook. Turns out he used to help produce This American Life so h...

Re: Errrr.....Excuse me?

It seems as though agents fall into the same category as plumbers. They may or may not get back to you and they may or may not show up.

Sort of like Comcast too.

How about this?

"Yo (agent name)! What gives?"

:)

Re: Self-pubbed author trampled by Amazon

Not sure what his sales were like before the giveaway but I know a lot of authors give the books away for a short time just to get it out there. I'd be a bit peeved too but everything happens for a reason. His book is now in the hands of 5000 plus people who will spread the word if they like it. He ...

These articles reaffirm my thoughts....

Fancy bells and whistles mean nothing if the tune sucks.

It's all about content.
