Re: Something of an odd question about translations
You know, that's a good idea. That's actually what I did with Dark Horse a couple of years ago because I couldn't find any information anywhere. I've just been afraid of looking like a newb, but honestly it's probably better to just ask and send what they want specifically than it is to guess and ta...

Re: Serial commas: yes or no
Found one. Pretty sure this counts. My answer hereby becomes a "yes." ;) If you follow the corridor from my office far enough, you’ll just end up at the First National Bank on the corner of Fourth Street (not that any security protocol allows for it). But if you get on the right elevator, ...

Re: Serial commas: yes or no
I wanna say no, but I think I've got a couple of lines that would qualify in my current WIP. Maybe. I'm too lazy to go searching at the moment for the quote to find out. ;)

Re: Advice From Amateurs?
I agree that the quality of advice is most important. I've seen some published writers say some goofy things before, and I've gotten some good advice from unpublished authors before. Heck, I'm unpublished (mostly, a short story ten years ago hardly counts :P), but I like to think I give decent advic...

Re: How do you know what is right for your Characters?
What is it that makes the ending predictable? It might be that the ending itself is okay, but that the foreshadowing needs to be turned down. This is how I do things, so it's going to by no means work for anyone else. I actually plot in advance these days (always subject to change during actual writ...

Re: American dialogue
I don't think being a Midwestern religious girl makes her have a super-ego. In fact, Midwesterner's are stereotypically more humble than most groups if you were going for that, but I think it's really, really, wrong to claim that she's going to have a super-ego based on where she lives. She might be...

Re: Something of an odd question about translations
I've been living in Japan for four years. I actually moved here to improve my Japanese. ;)

Re: American dialogue
If it makes you feel better, I had accidentally written, "btw" into my story and didn't catch it for three drafts...finally someone else pointed it out to me. :D

Re: American dialogue
This might just be because I'm reading it out of context, or I could be thinking I'm misreading it but really I'm not. ‘Twenty-nine years. Most of it I spent in the army. It was only when I came out that everything fell apart. I suppose it was the sort of marriage that couldn’t really cope with us b...

Something of an odd question about translations
I was just asking a friend about this yesterday (he was gathering advice for me from someone in the industry), and I was thinking I'd ask here as well. Does anyone know anything about translating? I've been studying Japanese for over six years now for the express purpose of being able to translate, ...

Post the spoilyness. Also, if you don't mind, the conversation at hand that you think gives it away would be nice to see, IMO anyway. :)

Re: American dialogue
There's still a big difference between American and British English. Whether you're talking Midwesterner or New Yorker, they're still going to sound American. If you've got a character asking for a "kitchen roll" instead of a paper towel, or a character say, "He's so pissed" and ...

Re: Is your self-confidence bipolar?
Oh gosh, are you kidding me? I usually do pretty good about being confident about my work, but I had a moment of sheer panic last night and basically spent the evening convinced it's hopeless. It's just nerves for me right now, though. I'm submitting soon and so now all the stuff I had been so certa...

Re: Any other writing teachers?
I had a writing class when I first started, but it's different because it's EFL. I'm an English teacher, though, and sometimes we do fun things like write stories in class. I love doing it a sentence at a time--passing a piece of paper around with a prompt and then each student adds their own line. ...

Am I allowed to quote you on that next time someone asks me what a three-act structure is? Cuz that's awesome haha.CharleeVale wrote:I just always assumed it was because we all need our 'beginning, middle, and end'.
