Re: Holiday Plans - anything fun or just shopping?
Working most of the time. I work in a large bookstore. The phrase "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" has a whole different meaning for those who work in retail. A friend cracked me up by saying at least it would all be over at the end of this week. Apparently she has never worke...

Re: Second Hand Books
I definitely understand second hand books for people who have tight budgets, but if you can afford it new books are the way to go if you want to support authors. Authors don't receive any royalties for used book sales, so if you want to write in this industry I feel like it's important to support t...

Re: What author would you have dinner with/what would you ask?
That's difficult. I'd have to choose between J.K. Rowling, Megan Whalen Turner, Diana Wynne Jones, and Patricia C. Wrede. But maybe I would just hold a dinner for five and spend the entire time being terribly intimidated and internally squeeing at so much brilliance all in one place. Patricia C. Wr...

Re: Do you prefer: Hardbacks or paperbacks?
So, to my enjoyment my mom brought Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. But to my dismay and irritation it's in hardback and it's a large book so... She said she buys hardback because they last longer and she's abusive to books. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows took two years to come out in pa...

Re: Recommendations: How to Books on Fiction Writing
Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft is a book I would highly recommend. King examines his own writing process, and gives advice to beginning writers as well. He used to be a high school English teacher, and judging from this book, I would say he was a good one.

Well as I would like the table to even out to ten, I'll have to invite Thomas Jefferson along with you.Mira wrote:Awesome dinners. I would have never thought of Thomas Jefferson, but I'd love to meet him.
Marla, please set me a plate, too. A banquet - brilliant. :)
Now who do I call for the catering? :-)

Whatever you do, don't visit the website http://icanhascheezburger.com/ That's where I saw "Surprised Kitty" along with other cat videos and many cat photos with funny captions. But if you do go, here are some great kitty videos: Video: Shooted Kitty http://icanhascheezburger.com/2009/11/1...

Re: Do you prefer: Hardbacks or paperbacks?
I prefer for my favorites to be in hardcovers, mostly because the paper quality is generally better. In fact, I would buy hardcovers of books I already have in paperbacks if I like them enough. I agree! Some books and series I just have to have in hardcover. Sometimes it takes me years to get an en...

This sounds interesting! I'll check it out.MosesSiregar wrote:"How not to Write a Novel: 200 Classic Mistakes and How to Avoid Them--A Misstep-by-Misstep Guide" by Mittelmark and Newman.
One of the most hilarious things I have ever read. It would even be funny to people with no interest in writing.

Re: Books and Movies Based on Them
Question: Do you prefer to read a book before you see a film, or do you prefer to see the film and then read the book? Myself, I prefer to see a film first and then read the book. Films subtract, books add. When I see a film where I have read the book already, I have to see the film twice. The first...

What are you reading now?
I’m reading The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates by Peter T. Leeson.
The book examines the economic aspects of the Golden Age of Piracy, from 1670 to 1725. Fascinating!
