Re: Do I need an Agent
My condolences. The best thing you can do is forget the PublishAmerica book exists, write to them and tell them you will never buy any copies, tell everyone you know that they are not a legitimate publisher and not to buy the book, then sit down and write a new book. When you have a new book, yes, y...

Re: 'Fess Up
Plenty of time this week, although not much at the computer. This week was print and read aloud week. That took three days at the desk with the red pen and one day at the computer getting the changes put in. Just copyediting for the most part. Next week is the read aloud on the computer week, follow...

From the new one:
David Lowell told his mum that having a seizure felt like falling asleep, even though he didn’t know what falling asleep felt like; he never remembered.

Re: Unreasonable Expectations
I have the opposite. If the writing goes too fast, I worry I'm missing things, not paying attention to voice and the logic of the story or finding the best solution. And guess what? I'm right!

Re: What writing disorder do you suffer from?
Microphobia. No matter where I am in the novel, I am always afraid I'm 15K from the end. I don't start to relax until I get to 80K, when I am actually 15K from the end.

Now reading Wallace Stegner's Big Rock Candy Mountain, which will save me time writing a memoir. Turns out he wrote it for me.

Re: Length of novel issues
I am always in terror that whatever novel I'm working on will come in under 75K. The one that was published in 2008 came in at 95.5K, and the one whose rough draft I finished today is 96.3K. So my phobia is in error, and I seem to have a consistent length emerging. But I'm sure I'll be just as nervo...

Re: Something of an odd question about translations
You're in business, then. I'd look for connections with small-time publishers in Japan (if there are any left) and see if they are interested in translating any of their work into English. And do post some information on Craigslist in larger U.S. cities to see if you can get some business going that...

Re: Something of an odd question about translations
When it comes to Japanese, I'd suggest you either go live in Japan for several years, or get a Master's Degree in Translation, or both. My sister has worked as a Japanese translator, mainly in television when she was living in Tokyo. I must say if it's six years of study outside Japan, it doesn't so...

Re: How do you know your writing is good enough?
I found a great site (not sure if its ok to link here) but it lists certain stats like 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' being rejected 137 times and Stephen King getting so many rejections for Carrie that he threw it in the trash (his wife got it back out)!! You know what stories you don't find on those...
