Re: Serial commas: yes or no

Oh, thank goodness :). I always use serial commas, so I'm glad to be part of the Cool Crowd!

Re: Recommended Fantasy Under 150K

I'm slowly coming around to shorter fantasy novels, and really enjoying them :). I'm a huge fan of George R.R.'s, so don't get me wrong--I love me some door stoppers! However, we have to consider that it's been a decade or more since the giant fantasy book came into vogue, so those of us who are use...

Re: Movie review: Sherlock Holmes

Dang, just wishful thinking, then ;). I could see RDJ doing an excellent Sherlock Holmes with all of his arrogant brilliance and fatal weaknesses. I could, too. I'm sad that it seemed to be so dull :(. I thought from the previews that it was definitely no Citizen Kane, but could at least be entertai...

Re: Monkeys vs. Bears

I can't decide, I can't decide. What if the Wicked Witch dispatched the Winged Bears? The movie would have been over right there. What if Smokey the Monkey told us not to start forest fires? Who listens to monkeys about *safety*? What if Goldilocks did a home invasion with the Three Monkeys? Goldil...

Re: Movie review: Sherlock Holmes

Or to better phrase the question, is there more or less sexual tension than the volleyball scene in Top Gun?

Re: Movie review: Sherlock Holmes

For those who have seen it, is it true that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are mere moments away from sweaty tongue wrestling throughout half the movie? That's what I heard, and (if true) may be reason enough for me to Netflix it later on ;).

Re: Trade Paperback: a response to the ebook issue?

As a mid-twenties reader, I'm absolutely more attracted to a book if it comes out in trade paperback :). $24-$35 has always been a little out of my price range for entertainment, so if I can get the same book right away for $12-$14, I'm a happy camper. Otherwise, I just buy the hardcover off Amazon ...

Re: Book trailers: who makes them, $$$, and are they worth it

This is fascinating :). I'd always wondered what people thought about book trailers and how effective they are. I've been turned off by a few as well, but wondered if there were some amazing ones that were highly successful. Has anyone else seen and been intrigued by videos of the author reading an ...

Re: Question on internal dialogue

I have some inner monologue in my manuscript, and beta readers told me the "he thought" "she thoughts" were cumbersome to read. I use the inner monologue sparingly, so when I do use it, I go with putting it italics. Example: "Hi, Steve," Tom said as he stepped into the ...

Re: Recommended Fantasy Under 150K

I really enjoyed ARIEL by Steven R. Boyett, and it's about 115k. Also, FIRE and GRACELINE by Kristin Cashore are stand alones, about 100k each, and fantastic!

I have to admit loving long fantasy, too, but sometimes it's nice to have a stand alone shorter one in there for variety's sake :).

Re: Night Butterfly - query revised - feedback welcomed!

Ooh, this reminds me of "Taken" in a good way :). First off, this second version is much clearer and more enticing than the first--well done! I am already intrigued. There are still a couple of things I think could be improved upon: "The leads take Valentina to Paradise Seven, a strip...

Re: Query critique for MG historical novel

Hi, Mark, First off, your book sounds awesome--I love the plot you've laid out here! :) I agree with the folks that say we need a little bit more detail, but also that more of a cliffhanger would leave us wanting more. I think a good way to add detail while still leaving the query at this length (or...

This is awesome! :) Being able to check e-books out would make me much, much more likely to get an e-reader.

Funny how that works, isn't it? Great article!
