I actually listen to an audiobook.

Re: General question about queries
I wanted to second Bryan on the general approach to memoirs. The submission process is the same as for fiction. The only difference is that, lacking the celebrity creds, you have to make a very strong case about why your memoir stands out in a pretty crowded playing field. That's a fact! ;) Right n...

Re: General question about queries
Thanks. But unfortunately it just muddies the water for me. I WISH I had celebrity status, but that's only in my mind! :D I've read a few - and I stress few - agents websites that say they want a proposal. Some don't. Maybe it's an agent thing? > insert curious look < Sometimes I think that it would...

Re: Ask Nathan
Mr Bransford, Is there a particular type of memoir that you like? A kind you absolutely detest? Your blog just mentions that you're a sucker for them. Candy I like good ones and detest bad ones. (Helpful, I know!) Honestly though I don't really have specific preferences when it comes to types of me...

Re: General question about queries
Thanks for the advice. I'll get that book as well. Someone recommended that I get "How to Write a Book Proposal" by Michael Larsen which I did. It's been a great help BUT I think it's mainly for "How To" style books as I am having a heck of a time trying to follow his instruction...

General question about queries
I've read in many threads that you add X Book is Y-Words. The ms is available at your request. I understand that.
If a book requires a proposal, is it okay to add that the proposal is available at request or proposal and ms?
Thanks,
Candy

Re: Ask Nathan
I would think that humor is appropriate if it reflects your writing voice. If you're querying, say, a memoir of harrowing survival of cancer and cannibalism, levity would work against you. I don't know if I can agree with you on this. I'm writing a memoir of survival, doesn't have much to do with a...

Re: SAVE THE TREES!
I have to print mine out. It's easier to edit my ms. HOWEVER, I have 3 grandkids that like writing and drawing and such so when I'm done, I give the papers to my grandkids and they use the other side.

Re: Ask Nathan
I've wondered the same thing. I SO want to query the great Mr Bransford and say, "your blog mentions that you're a sucker for memoirs and when in doubt to query you." But something tells me that he'd beat the 15 minute rejection letter! ;)

Thanks. You read so many different things, it's mind boggling to say the least.
Guess this would be part of Nathan's lasagna recipe!

Re: Question about sluglines
This is from the website where it's shown: http://www.shunn.net/format/novel.html. It looks to me like the guy uses his pen name in it, but considering he's published I wasn't sure if that was the norm, so to speak.

Thanks. I read that one, but I can't find anything about the names in a slugline.

Thank you gentlemen for serving.
I was a sergeant in the Army and I'd be willing to read. I prefer only a couple chapters at a time. You could say that I'm thick skinned. ;)
I'm writing a memoir about the Army! ]:X
