Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE
THANK YOU, bcomet! :-) Very funny. And my husband is an investment banker, and it is definitely not the way to go, unless 16-hour days writing computer code and scanning printouts for errors and sitting in meetings talking about how not enough is getting done while you sit in the meeting getting not...

Re: Injuries from writing?
ErroAstra: May I suggest that you look into the Alexander Technique? It's a way of addressing chronic issues like pain that result from the repetition of a certain activity (like typing, for example). It's most often used by actors, dancers, and athletes, but I know a couple of physical therapists w...

Re: Grey or Gray
I think that the most important thing is that you are consistent within your manuscript. Just pick one - whichever one you want - and stick with it. It's an easy fix if an agent or editor thinks that a change is necessary.

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?
LITTLE WOMEN, LITTLE MEN, JO'S BOYS (all by Louisa May Alcott), I liked those a lot, too; I read LITTLE WOMEN a couple of times. I was also a big fan of the LITTLE HOUSE series, and I got them all for my kids. (They're in the attic with some of my old books, waiting for my kids to get a little olde...

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?
I remembered the other day that when I was a kid, I read TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE NOTHING and SUPERFUDGE countless times. I mean, I can still quote from them. It wasn't until I grew up and had other draws on my time (like my kids, and my house) that I kind of stopped rereading. Oh wow, I really love...

Re: You have another think coming
I learned that when I lived in Scotland several years ago. I had said "thing" all my life up until then, and a friend finally corrected me by saying, "Don't you mean 'think'?" I was happy to learn; I disagree with Polymath that to correct a person's grammar when requested to is a...

Re: You Know You're a Writer When...
You find yourself mentally narrating your life. E.g., "She turned the tap on, then relaxed as the cool water soothed the already blistering tip of her finger. She swore never to try to flip a grilled cheese sandwich with her bare hands again.", etc. Then, you realize that what you just sel...

Re: Kick-Thyself Moments
I wrote an "anonymous" query to be read at a "first pages and queries" feedback session at a local conference. It was peppered with made-up names for the agent, myself, etc., and I had signed off with a made-up address as a placeholder. I got great feedback on my query, and since...

Re: Peeta Vs. Gale
PEETA!!! I just read both books in the last 3 days. To say that I can't wait for MOCKINGJAY to come out would be something of an understatement. And I'm on Team Peeta. Partly for all the reasons abc mentioned above, (Peeta is SO perfect, it would be criminal to let him get away - men like that are R...

Re: Bestsellers that don't live up to the hype
I liked The DaVinci Code because of the ideas presented in it, and it made me go out and look for a bunch of information on the topics covered. But when I read Angles and Demons, it felt like reading the same book with a couple of different characters and a slightly different topic, but with the sam...

Ink: Wow. Thank you for this thoughtful, insightful, eloquent post. And thank you for sharing your experience in writing your most recent work with us. Justine: Write what you love, yes, of course. Why write sci-fi if you really love historical romance? If historical romance is what you love, of cou...
