Re: Your top-10 all-time favourite books
Wow, almost missed this. That'll teach me to spend a weekend hiding in an internet-less room. My favorite books . . . *whips out 20 ft long list* 1. A Song of Ice and Fire , George R. R. Martin. Seriously. Can't. Read. Enough. *goes on an hour long rant about their awesomeness, gets shot by a mob of...

Re: Good or Bad Idea?
Wow!! Thanks for all the advice; this is really good. Some of this stuff, I never thought of before. Now, I think I'm definitely going to do it (and keep this page as a reference) although I won't be ready to start it for a while

Good or Bad Idea?
Okay, so I tried posting this and it disappeared, I think. If this posts twice, my apologies. I've been trying to figure out an idea for a blog that (1) has not been done over and over again, (2) I won't get bored with after three days, and (3) appeals to somebody besides me. So, I was thinking, I h...

Re: Last Names in High Fantasy
Just do what feels the most natural for the characters. If it feels like throwing in last names would ruin the flow, don't do it, but if you're going out of your way to write around surnames, you have a problem. I would say that most high fantasies/fantasies in general are based in Europe (usually E...

Re: YA vs. Adult
Cool point on the firsts. I never thought of it that way :) But I think that, while there aren't limits in YA per se, content will affect how the novel is viewed. For instance, Jodi Piccoult is an amazing author of adult books. I'm not that into realistic fiction, but I've enjoyed what I've read by ...

Re: YA vs. Adult
Really interesting blog post! Definitely answered most of my questions. And, seeing as I'm more than a year away from not being an adult, I don't think I can help writing things that appeal to at least some teenagers ;)

YA vs. Adult
What makes a book young adult or adult? Is it word count? Writing style? Content appropriateness? Ages of the characters? Or a combination of all three? If your book has too many/too little words for the age group, some agents may write it off. Writing style could pass the query stage, but one look ...

Non-Book Books
IMO, books tend to have more substance than movies, comics, TV shows, etc. However, every now and then, you'll run into a non-book piece of media that really is just as good as a book. If my plots and character development were like Babylon 5's, my dialogue like Firefly's, my suspense like Death Not...

Re: Light YA recommendations
I saw "YA recommendations" and hopped right in to campaign for my favorites . . . until I saw the "no darkness" part. So horror probably isn't what you're looking for.

Re: Ages of main characters in YA novels
Of course, there is a distinction between characters and main characters. Significant, recurring characters over 18 are perfectly acceptable, but the protagonist should usually be a teenager. I remember my younger sister reading a (definitely YA) series of quick romance books with main characters in...

Re: Does analyzing books ruin them?
Interesting observations :) I don't intentionally analyze books; it's just become so much of a habit for me that I do it unconciously. Even if I'm really enjoying a book, I find myself going through mental checklists afterwards. And if there are some serious errors, I feel myself reaching for my red...

Does analyzing books ruin them?
So, if you followed the thread on Twilight a few weeks ago, you probably guessed this, but I'm a bit of a feminist, and they don't let you into the club unless you overanalyze everything. And cut your hair and lose your sense of humor, but that's a different story. Anyways, whenever I'm reading a bo...

Okay, just coming up with this now, so it'll probably be horrible, but . . .
I'm lost.
I know the way back, but I'm so
Lost.
I know how I got this way, but I'm
Lost.
I'm choosing to stay here and saying I'm
Lost
Because it's easier to be
Lost
Than to find myself.

Re: Summer Book Recs?
What am I reading over the summer? Well . . . *gets out list* Oh, and an explanation for the extreme nerdiness: my WIP is very political, so I figured I might as well get the basics down, which explains about half of those. And as for the rest of them? I'm . . . just . . . nerdy. I cut class to hide...
