Why "no response means no" is flawed

Everyone who's querying or has even thought about querying knows about the often discussed "no response means no" policy that so many agents have adopted over the years. I've always argued that that's a flawed system and that, aside from being somewhat rude and possibly more time consuming...

Re: National Novel Writing MAY

I'm in. I'm going to say my goal is two novellas and a short story (roughly 50k words) but I'll have to amend that if my editor(s) comes through with edits in May, which either or both of them might.

Re: POV - 3rd person slipping to omni??

Technically speaking, yes, that's a pov switch---she can't truly know what everyone is thinking and this would be flagged by many editors. You probably don't need the statement at all, as it's implied. If you feel you do need it, simply change it to "everyone seemed to be.." or "every...

Re: [Deleted by author]

Thank you, Rachel, for coming back to the thread and apologizing for your rant. I am truly sorry to hear about what your mother experienced. That is, indeed, a horrific thing for her to have gone through, and I can thoroughly understand why you would feel protective of her and hyper-sensitized to th...

Re: Fifty Shades of Grey: what do you think?

Mira-- I truly appreciate what you are trying to do here and I know you're now in a difficult position but you're still failing to understand what I see as the main point here. Let's remove the "erotica" part of this discussion. This is a forum for writers. A poster on this forum was advoc...

Re: Fifty Shades of Grey: what do you think?

I agree with Sommer that this thread should return to being a discussion of the book, however I feel the need to point out that part of the reason I stepped in with a comment in the first place was that the book was being "discussed" (trashed/ripped apart/falsely represented) by people who...

Re: Dos and don'ts for writer websites...?

I'm no expert of websites or blogging, but I do maintain an author website and can tell you my opinion and what I know from other authors. The most common home pages these days are those that take you to the most recent post. I don't know why, that's just what's popular these days. It's important to...

Seeking advice on YA project

One of the members of my writing group is getting ready to start querying her first novel. It's YA, paranormal and although it's very much a stand alone book it has series potential. I know my way around the querying process and have been helping her with that but since I write women's fiction and e...

Re: What's the proper thing to do here?

First off, congrats on getting the referral! Second, you're actually probably better off querying while the agent is closed. Since you are able to say you're writing at the recommendation of someone, you're not breaking the "no-cold-submissions" rule of subbing to someone who's closed. And...

Re: Fifty Shades of Grey: what do you think?

I seriously debated whether or not I was going to take time to comment on this thread because I don't like to get into personal arguments with other posters, but I decided that the posts in this thread are so inflammatory that I can't in good conscience walk away without putting in my two cents. Tha...

Very excited to announce that the erotic romance novel I co-authored with fellow Bransforumer Karen Booth (Karenbb) will be released tomorrow by Ellora's Cave! If you're over 18 and would like to check out the blurb or a brief excerpt you can do so by checking here: http://www.jasminejade.com/p-9719...

Re: How to handle request for an exclusive read

First off, congrats on the request for an exclusive! That's awesome! I agree 6 weeks should be sufficient and you could probably ask if she can get back to you in 4 weeks. Also, make sure to let her know if your manuscript is out with anyone else already or if you have other outstanding queries. Be ...
