Re: On pacing and introducing main characters

I think it all depends on your story. In my current work, one of the major main characters is killed off 1/3 of the way through the book. Another main character is introduced in about the last 1/3. I am ruthless with my characters. I like it when a book surprises me with the unexpected -- after all,...

Re: What are you reading now?

Finished two books yesterday -- -- SANDSTORM by James Rollins. Quite an adventurous thriller. -- UNWORTHY by Kirsten Beyer. This is a Star Trek novel. Yes, I'm a Trekkie. It was absolutely fascinating, though! Star Trek books are far better than most people think they are. And today I will be starti...

Re: POLL: Where do you buy your books?

Chapters -- a large Canadian book store chain -- in their physical stores. I've always been a fan of the chain and their other book stores (Indigo & Coles); I worked at a Coles store for about a year too, so I'm fiercely loyal. Sometimes, I'll head over to McNally Robinson, another large format ...

My resume and unfortunate magazine names

Over the past year and a half, I've had four articles published -- two online and two in a magazine. All four were about various social justice / peace / community partnerships type of things -- and as I'm trying to get a job in that realm of the working world, I like to put my publishing history on...

Re: Tone down a gay character?

I am by no means an expert... but I am a Youth Worker who is actually a teacher by training and I have a variety of other youth/teen related work experience. Being an advocate for youth, I LOVE that your MC unquestioningly accepts Michael's homosexuality. With the teens I work with, I am finding tha...

Re: How old are you?

I'm surprised how many people are the same age as me or near to it (cuz on another discussion forum I partake in, not writing-related, I'm on the few in their 20s). I'm 26 -- turning 27 in two and a half weeks. I started writing in grade 8. We had to write a short story for English class and I had t...

Re: Does your MS go up or down in size?

My edits and rewrites only make my word count grow. When I read through my first draft and work to make it better, I often find I've been skimpy on details and mood in my effort to get all the dialogue and action perfect. So my rewrites tend to leave the dialogue and action alone, but adds a ton to ...

Re: Co-Authoring / Writing with a Partner

Yeah, I'm treading very cautiously. For my own writing, I've got my own set of universes, characters, themes, etc. For this potential co-authoring project, I am intending to completely separate the joint writing from my individual writing. From what we've got so far, which isn't much more than a hoo...

Co-Authoring / Writing with a Partner

I've got a friend that I've been tossing a few story ideas around with and we've expressed interest in writing something together. The only issue is that we have no idea how a co-authoring process works -- and I'm sure there are as many methods as there are co-authors. The slight hitch in this whole...

Re: Can you read while you write?

I MUST read while writing -- reading recharges my creative batteries and keeps me going. I never worry about picking up the book's style or unintentionally mimicing the author I'm reading or that reading the book will make me feel inadequate about my own work. They do affect me, but in a positive wa...

If it helps, I'll make my posts sound more Canadian -- you know, throw in some "eh"s and some "no doot aboot it"s and stuff like that.

The Introduction Thread

Hey all -- I'm new here and don't know anybody, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I did a quick search and couldn't find a pre-existing intro thread, so I'm starting one! *cackles madly with power* My name's craig and I come from Canada -- one of the colder parts of Canada and no it's not the froze...

Re: What are you writing now?

I'm in the final stretch (13,000 words to go in my projected-to-be-90,000-word work) of a dark SF novel with noir-ish elements. Then I have to heavily edit it and rewrite portions. We'll see how long this takes me as I'm busy enough with work and school.

(Yay! My first post ever on this forum!)
