Re: How to know you're not a writer?

They shouldn't be asking questions that are, for all intense and purpose, stupid? I'm sorry, Sierra, but this cracks me up. I know this feeling so well. I always want to say, "Whadda mean, you don't get it? What in the Mackinac Island fudge do you think the preceding sentence/paragraph/chapter...

Re: Query Conundrum

That sounds like a fascinating story. If you start with the good Doctor and his villainy, I think the synopsis might flow more comfortably for you.

Re: Bulletin Board Typology

It's the emdash that I need to work on, Poly, not the em space. Have you ever noticed how some people throw them around so confidently? And, after looking at your symbology list, I have to ask, why it is that didn't we get an interrobang to use for ordinary punctuation? It would have been such a use...

Re: Time Jump - a good idea?

Polymath mentioned the way time jumps are handled in movies. I like that analogy. Chapter breaks are the novelistic equivalent of the POV camera cutting away to a different scene. Shifting a reader's viewpoint in time and place is the author's purview, and the writer's joy. But, it seems to me that ...

Re: I just discovered I have an I-pod and it plays music

lol. I'm a SansaClip woman myself, Mira, although I don't download music as much as I do library audiobooks and BBC/NPR podcasts. The clip also has an FM radio, a handy voice recording feature, and a slot card player, which, in my SansaClip, holds a card with a thousand of the best songs from the ei...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Bless you, Wilderness. That was a wonderful insight into a major oversight. Of course that needs to be clear from the start!

Didn't I read that you have a full out being read now? I hope that ends well for you.

Thank you, again, for the help.

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

However, it's a bit unclear from the title and the description if this a book about the father or the one-time boyfriend -- or about the daughter. I'm unsure how much I'll be reading about secret organizations and clandestine operations, and how much I'll be reading about researching and a girl's f...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Thanks again, y'all. Wilderness, I am not Thomas Townsend Brown's biographer. I came into this story in May, 2008, just in time to read the last chapters of DEFYING GRAVITY on the web. I was convinced that Linda lived somewhere close by, and I joined the book discussion forum. Mr. Twigsnapper, an oc...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Thank you again, Quill and Wilderness. I think we are far closer to having a completed query than we have ever been. rose ************************************************* Dear Agent Once Linda Brown agrees to help a biographer document the life of her late father, fabled physicist Thomas Townsend B...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Oh boy, two thumbs sorta up so far! Wilderness, the reason I am loathe to give up the books entirely is that they demonstrate that we have an extant platform which is important to publishers of non-fiction. I will work on finding another way to work that in, however. And, as I have said, we will hyp...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

That's very helpful, Wilderness. Really, really helpful! Thank you for taking time to reply. The tense issue is a minor problem, and will be easily fixed and I will split out the booklist, hyperlink the titles and include some of them in a footnote. But to answer some of your other questions: ******...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Thank you, Pladuim. I'm posting this revised query just to maintain a version trail. For the record, I am not Linda Brown, the author of the memoir. I am her co-author. When we submit this query via e-mail, we will make sure to hyperlink the book titles to their Amazon or B&N pages. Unstinting ...

Re: Are agents willing to sell only non-digital rights?

All righty, then. We will hold off on approaching a entertainment lawyer for a while longer, then. And, in regard to the earlier question, we will be more than happy so sign over those digital rights, if and when we get picked up for publication. Thank you so much for taking time to answer, Nathan. ...

Re: Page Critique Friday 9/10/10

I was completely engaged in your scene-setting passages, perhaps because of my own recollections of musicians and the Detroit/Cincinnati blues scene. Detroit hums an inner city, play of light on uneven brick weave streets, sharp bite of wind in the air music of its own. If you want or need to captur...

Re: Any book collectors here?

I loved The Bookman series by John Dunning, which uses the profession of book collecting as the background for each mystery and I would be a serious collector, if only I had the room, the money, the time. My best find: a book of poetry by Edna St. Vicent Millay that was, judging from the signature i...
