Re: To Read or Not to Read
Now that I'm editing my MS, I am able to read more and not have the weight of feeling like I should be hunched at my keyboard. I know that reading makes for a better writer, but I guess I'm an all or nothing person. I like the idea of splitting the week up and devoting a few days to reading a few da...

To Read or Not to Read
I really love a good book. I have a stack waiting beside my bed for me. The problem is that I once I get into a book, pretty much everything else goes out the window until I get through the last page, including writing. I feel that the time I spend reading is taking away from my writing time. I know...

Re: First 250 words: YA fantasy
I like the feel of the story, the imagery you are setting up. However, it's a bit wordy. You have a lot of filler words that get in the way. I have made a few suggestions: The first 250 words of my novel, A Lullaby which is a YA fantasy, well just on the brink of paranormal romance too. Rip it apart...

Re: Editing... is a nightmare.
Are you a decent typist? It not, perhaps there is someone you know who is. What you need (I believe) is to see everything all in once place so you can read it all through as a whole. It's difficult to see where the problems are if you are constantly going between notebooks and files. Once you have i...

Re: Are there any tried and true rules about prologues?
I like prologues. But, as was mentioned earlier, they have to be more than just backstory. Also, they MUST tie in with what the book is about. If the prologue doesn't really fit in with book one, then I say move it to book three for sure. Otherwise the reader may be left wondering why it was include...

Re: First Query Description -- WESTERN WASTE
Hi SuCue, Someone else pointed me to a great website and I thought I'd do the same for you. It's Query Shark. She's honest (VERY honest) with her comments. If you read her blog I know it will help you come up with a good workable query. Here's the site: http://queryshark.blogspot.com/ Her instructio...

Re: Imagery
Going back to the imagery topic, it got me thinking about certain cliches that evoke a very specific image. For example, "Hark! What light from yonder window breaks..." or "the grassy knoll..." and more recent, "Can't we all just get along..." These evoke specific image...

Do you listen to music? What motivates your muse?
When I'm writing I HAVE to have music going. It can't be just any music either. Classical, and it has to be something I already know really well so my mind can sort of tune it out, yet still keep the emotions and ideas flowing. What about you? Do you need background music?

Re: Can you write anywhere?
I can write just about anywhere, but if I'm not at home, I can only write the old-fashioned way; with pen and paper (OK, pencil). At home, I have to have the headphones in and the music on something classical. Then I can go for hours on my computer.

Re: Share your opening sentence!
It was the year 1850; or at least, it was today. This sounds like it might be a time travel kind of story, and I'm a sucker for time travel stories! Today it's 1850, but tomorrow, perhaps it will be 2150? I absolutely want to read more! :) Here's mine. Nahaveeta stood on a rock at the edge of the r...

Re: When that awesome chapter you wrote just doesn't fit anymore
I have several chapters (awesome ones I might add) that will never make it into my manuscript. When I wrote them, I didn't have a clear vision of where my story was going or who my characters really were so they don't really fit. It's a crying shame too because they're pretty good. But they were cru...

Re: Past Tense & Present Tense Blunders
I do that to. I tend to write exactly how I think, otherwise I forget and don't get my thoughts out on the page quick enough. Then I go back and edit specifically for tenses because I know in advance that they're going to be messed up. As for right or wrong tense, I don't really think there is one, ...

Re: What Do Boys Want? thread ode to Mira, master question asker
Right, it depends on what age boys we are talking. Boys go from wanting their mommies to wanting candy and comic books, to wanting friends, to wanting girls, to wanting jobs, families, grandkids, and finally tapioca pudding and a clean bowel movement. In between there are all sorts of lesser and gr...

Re: Time to Write
Having a year off from work WAS wonderful, I must say. But it didn't really help my writing all that much. I had lots of plans and goals for that year, and I didn't meet most of them. The ones I did meet, I think I could have accomplished if I'd stayed employed! That being said, I was glad for all t...
