Re: What have your characters taught you?
I have found that sometimes my characters are smarter than I am, and make better decisions than I do. Perhaps my unconscious is trying to tell me something? I have found myself thinking I should be more like some of my characters. If I had to pin down something that I have learned from my characters...

Re: One Line Pitch
Cheeky Chook, Poly math - Thank you! Excellent advice. I agree with you Polymath that I need to include a cause. I think that's why I was questioning my pitch in the first place. But I was hoping I could get away with it! :) Cheeky Chook, I don't twitter myself, but your post has given me reason to ...

Re: One Line Pitch
I've been lurking on this thread for a couple of days and have enjoyed reading the pitches. I hadn't actually started one for my MS before this so here's my first attempt. The title of my novel is SOULSONG. On the night of her graduation from college to be a concert pianist Jane Picardy discovers a ...

Marketing Yourself
I recently queried an agent that used a "form." In the form there was a question asking if I had any means of my own for marketing my novel. The question took me by complete surprise. I didn't know I would have to be doing that! I ended up answering that I couldn't think of any. Needless t...

Re: How do you title a book?
Oh, I wish I knew the answer. The title for my current WIP seemed to fit so perfect. (The WIP is still in edit/review mode.) I loved the title. When I shared the work with my writing groups, they all said "Sounds like a Regency romance novel set in the Southwest." Which it is not. At all....

Re: George R. R. Martin
I've read them up to the FEAST OF CROWS. It took him so long to come out with this one that I pretty much lost interest by the time it came out. But I enjoyed them up to that point.

Perhaps you could scare the begeesers out of him somehow. Smoke him out, so to speak.

Re: Content appropriateness in YA books?
I think it would appeal to a YA audience because it has faster pacing than most of the adult books I've read, and a lot of the conflicts I think would appeal more to teenagers. But I could be wrong. Also, since I've read more YA books than adult, I think that the style has rubbed off on me. What I ...

Re: This One's For the Girls: Lies Books Tell Us About Love
Now I love my husband so I don't want anyone calling me unromantic or pessimistic about love. I love him, I love our life together, and I thank God for him everyday, but let's be real. I'm Elizabeth maybe five percent of the time if he's lucky, and I get Mr. Darcy about 5 percent of the time if I'm...

NEW Adult - yes, you are right. I'm glad to know it's relatively new, and that I'm not quite SO ignorant. :/
Thanks Cheekychook! :)

Early Adult - New Genre?
I just read a blog post that mentioned Early Adult as a genre aiming at ages 18 - 22. Is this new or am I revealing my ignorance again? I've never heard of it before. My MS deals with this age group and am wondering if I should change my query letter. Right now I list it as fantasy. Hmm...

Re: Do you listen to music? What motivates your muse?
I have a few songs that, when I hear them, I think of a particular character. The music becomes that character's theme song. However, when that happens, I can no longer listen to that music when I write (unless I'm focusing on that particular character) . Thank the Gods there is an endless supply of...

Re: Is reading enough to spark creativity?
Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Edgar Allen Poe didn't have TV. They had their own life experiences and the things they read. That's all you need. All the rest will pretty much just get in the way.
