Re: What Do You Write For?
Writing is freaking addicting! My friends all complain of their annoying Diet Coke addictions. Me, it's my writing. Once I'm into the plot and in the thick of the writing I just want more and more. I think that's why I get SOOO upset when I come to a block and can't seem to get my ideas out there. I...

Re: Pre-story paragraph
Not really sure that you need it. If it's just one paragraph, then it shouldn't be too difficult to put that info somewhere in the story. Somehow you could artfully slip the necessary information in without it becoming an "info dump." Having said that however, Anne McCaffrey, who wrote the...

Re: Formatting issue .....
Really? That's all I do (the tab key). I never knew there was a problem. Hmm, guess I'll check back to see what others have to say. Sorry I was no help, but thanks for posing the question! :)

Re: How NOT to respond to reviews.
Thanks everyone for the clarification on "indie" vs. "self-pub." Upon thinking on it though, I guess I shouldn't say "vs" in this context - it might start something!

Re: How NOT to respond to reviews.
I saw this posted on twitter, read it and was appalled. The author goes on the site of the reviewer, bashes him, and posts other good reviews in the comment section. Then when he defends himself, she acts like a five year old! http://booksandpals.blogspot.com/2011/03/greek-seaman-jacqueline-howett....

Re: Waltzing in the Shadows
A few quick things. First, it's Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Gotta make sure your spellings (especially for famous people) are correct. Second, 156,000 words is HUGE! From what I've read, the most a novel should be is 130,000 words, and that's pushing the limit. Most agents won't look...

Re: Need some Mojo
Robin, I have SO been where you are. It's a terrible feeling! I get amost panicky. Then when I sit down to write I cannot even force myself to think about it. But, I have found something that helps me (usually). I go somewhere, most often to a park or maybe a quiet drive in the car, and daydream abo...

Re: Does learning the craft of writing impact creativity?
Leila, I like your music analogy. I had a similar experience in a counterpoint class I took in college. There are SO many rules: no descending thirds, no open fourths or fifths, no... well, I could go on and on. We all would complain in class that we could find actual examples of Bach breaking these...

Re: Writing out of order or not?
I have to write in order. If I try to write out of order I become completely paralyzed. Chapter 1 comes before Chapter 2, you know? Sommer, I am like this too. But, I do have ideas in my head for scenes that I aim the story toward. However, I have found that if I write the scene when it comes to me...

Re: Pronunciation Guides in Novels
OMG, Beethovenfan, I didn't mean to make you doubt your manuscript when I said that. It's a pet peeve of mine. When I mentioned my personal distaste for pronunciation guides, I was referring to a specific genre where the names and places have been made up by the author themselves. Real names are a ...
