Re: Fixing Book Rankings
Now that word is starting to get out and at least one of the authors involved has blogged about this happening to her erotic romance, I'll confirm that it's B&N manipulating their bestseller list.

Re: Fixing Book Rankings
Margo, I sincerely hope I didn't offend you. I am FIRMLY against censorship. And from what you're saying, not only are authors being censored by omission, they're being censored by a targeted effort. Times like this, my words fail me. But I hope if you ever needed people to help beat the bushes and...

Blog Comment Problems
Just FYI, Nathan, I haven't commented on your blog in awhile, so when I tried today I discovered the word verification system was a little more stringent. Took me six tries before I finally figured out what the darn thing said. A couple of times, the photo part was literally just a gray blob on a li...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings
On a side note, I'm always horrified when issues like this come up and other writers (pretty sure nothing they write would ever come under fire) begin to come up with scenarios when it would be okay to censor/ban/bury a book that does NOT violate a law or even the distributor Terms of Service. Let u...

Re: Fixing Book Rankings
Specifics... There are safeguards to watch for mass buys by one account, so that's mute. The list I'm talking about is not a marketing list. It is (supposedly) a list of the bestselling books among ALL books offered by a particular distributor. If the distributor doesn't want a book or a kind of boo...

Fixing Book Rankings
So, how would you guys feel about a major book distributor...one with its own e-reader, let's put it that way...manually changing book rankings to keep them out of the top 100? Is it ethical? If it financially harms an author who had a title in the top 100, do you think the author should have recour...

Re: 10 Book-Marketing Techniques Which Annoy Potential readers
I also get mildly annoyed when someone asks for book recommendations and someone pops up and starts promoting their book. I guess that's legit but for some reason I think you shouldn't be so quick to flog your own work unless you're an established author. Perhaps I'm wrong and in that case, I need ...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
I finished a 5K race this weekend! This is huge because I have spent most of the summer injured and unable to train. I am dog tired still even today and I'm achey everywhere, but I don't regret it for one tiny minute. I even beat my time from my first 5K race back in April! Thank you Tricia for ins...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
Margo, How did you find the/make the art for the covers for your Amazon.com books? Did you work with other professionals on editing, formatting, layout, marketing, etc. too? Would love to learn more about your process. Your success is very inspiring! I'll try to answer briefly and hit the highlight...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
Please don't mob me or anything, but I actually don't like the Dragonriders of Pern. I read the first book and just couldn't get into it at all. I have heard good things about the Crystal Singers (outside of this thread, I mean) but have hesitiated having not enjoyed her most beloved series. Do y'a...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi
McCaffrey's The Ship Who Sang (the first of the ship books that Mira couldn't recall) and her Powers That Be (Petabee) series. Both series start to degrade as they progress (just my opinion), but the first couple of books are longstanding faves for me. As someone mentioned, her books are soft soft s...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread
Thank you, guys. Much appreciated. I saw an interesting list yesterday of the top 100 indie authors (aka self-pubbed, not small press) on Amazon for August 2012. The sales numbers were self-reported, and I know about a half-dozen writers with numbers that would have put them higher than I'd be on th...

Re: Emotional Overload
You might try conveying some of the emotions through action that illustrates the emotion. Did you ever read the Wicked & Tricksy post I did on why my characters don't cry or say "I love you"? That.
