Re: Favourite characters' names?
Sommer and Cookie, what's strange about Figgy and Lorp? I know lots of people called that. Margo, you make blue in the face! (Literally, it's the woad.) You may take away our lives, but you'll never take away our weird pronunciation! It's English that should be pronounced like Gaelic, not the other...

And Claudie, unfortunately I know who dies. My best friend told me when she was reading it. She cried.
At least I don't know exactly how it ends.

Re: Favourite characters' names?
Speaking of unpronounceable names, I always loved Patricia McKillip's Riddle Master trilogy. One of her characters was a powerful wizard called Iff of the Unpronounceable Name. Of course that wasn't his full name, no one could say his full name because it was ridiculously long what not. And Iff of ...

Re: Favourite characters' names?
Remember, we're all pronouncing Voldemort wrong. J.K.R never has pronounced the 't'. So maybe it some instances, it doesn't matter what the author says about pronunciation. I too said Hermione wrong until the first film came out - I said it like "Hermy-own." I've always loved Merry from L...

Re: Huck Finn Gets Some Changes
I wrote a blog post about it that is full of frustration and shock. I hate the whole mess. It's the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies of the next big trend- let's clean up the classics! If it's good enough for Huck Finn, To Kill a Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye are going to love their new look! T...

Re: Favourite characters' names?
Lol. I mumble the names. Hee hee hee. How about Hermione in Harry Potter? I found out that I'd been reading it (and mentally pronouncing) it wrong for years. Or maybe those other people are wrong? I believe I've heard it pronounced several different ways! ...I wonder if JK got any grief from her be...

Re: Favourite characters' names?
I won't stop reading a book because a character or places name is unpronounceable, but after a while I while stop trying to pronounce it. I do this, too. If I can't figure out a name, I'll just focus on the first 2 or 3 letters so I will recognize the name next time it comes up. This works well for...

Re: What is your least favorite thing about this time of year?
I LOVE Massachusetts! I wish I could still be living there. I just couldn't afford it and go back to school. I lived in Revere, just outside Boston, but I traveled all over the area. I cried every month too. I had two roommates, three at one point, and our apartment was $3500 a month. HOLY HAND GRE...

Re: Favourite characters' names?
I don't like unpronounceable names either. I just don't get why a writer would do that. In some cases, it's just a matter of the writer not realizing that people can't pronounce something that the writer can. I had this issue when I was writing epic fantasy and posting writing for critiques on the ...

I hate that too! Is it so much to ask to have my hands as smooth as a baby's bottom?
