Re: E-books have mass.

Lol, I thought this was about a funeral service being held :D The Catholic Church just changed the format of the readings from layman's English to a Latin translation, and there's speculated to be a "Mass" "Exodus" because the regular folks in the pews don't know what the :twiste...

Re: A great author has died.

She will be missed. Kudos to her for disproving the gender stereotype that speculative fiction isn't women's domain too. She and others like Octavia Butler and Ursula LeGuin have paved the way for contemporary female SF authors to really carve out a future all their own.

Re: Any words of wisdom for a pantser?

You know what I find, as I really don't know where on the fence I sit (although the grass is always greener when the field isn't barren), is that it sometimes helps to try new approaches to the action of "getting things done." Meaning, if sitting down and typing/writing doesn't work for yo...

Space-age treatment for "writer's block"!

I found this extremely intriguing: http://www.massgeneral.org/neurology/doctors/doctor.aspx?id=17016 Alice Flaherty is a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who tailors a good "chunk" of her practice to helping patients overcome creative mental blockages -- and has eve...

The end of the "celebrity author"?

...Say it ain't so! :( This post from writer Justine Musk at her blog Tribal Writer makes me feel sad: In the old days of publishing (which now seem as long-gone as the dinosaurs), publishers gave you the space and patience for that [steady growth through print publication] to happen. If they publi...

My birthday on Bransforums? ;)

Not really social media-related per se, but since online bulletin boards are a form of "networking," I have a quick question (and it might sound silly, but bear with me)... As most of you know, my b'day is Feb. 29. So technically, even though I've been on Earth for coming up on 20 years, t...

Re: Removing Tabs

I don't have a Mac either but I do have Word (as probably "99 Percent" of us do, a pox on Gates of the "one percent"). /end of #Occupy rant ;) Anyway, another thing you can do is goto Show All Characters, which (on my Windows version -- damn, another M$ product!) is on the toolba...

How do authors retain certain rights (read below)?

1) Much as I'm a proponent of innovation and freedom of expression, I still tend to hang on to the traditional media of printed books, and I know that if I were ever published I would not want my work in ebook format. I understand this probably sounds like I'm trying to party like it's 1899, but sti...

American Censorship Day is/was today

Hi Mr. Bransford, I hate to push another link/cause on you as a suggestion for the site, but this one, I believe, is just as important as #OccupyWriters. "American Censorship Day" is/was today, Nov. 16, 2011, and right now the U.S. Congress is having a vote on a landmark draconian piece of...

Re: Real-world people as models for characters?

I love to play around with the idea of who might play my character in a movie. I always have a couple of people, because I don't want to write the character specifically FOR someone, but it's fun to think about who might play the role. But in terms of whether I would say that in a book - it's reall...

Also, today is V-day -- Vendetta day, aka Guy Fawkes Day as featured in the movie V for Vendetta, the eponymous single-initialed (anti)hero wearing the mask most reminiscent of the 17th-century British folk legend. Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, Gunpowder, treason, and plot! I see no rea...

Re: Best format of introductory blog post?

Thanks, Ms. Leigh, for the very insightful response. I think for at least the time being I'm going to squirrel away and be a more offline presence than online one. When I feel more confident that I've got a decent amount of work to pool from, then maybe I'll get my pinky toe wet in the social-media ...

Hi xouba, Not sure if you're still reading this thread, but maybe have a look at Lulu. I only know that American actor (and computer aficionado himself) Wil Wheaton self-published collections of his best/favorite blog posts through the site, which sold out and I think had to be "restocked"...

Re: New York Observer dumps on readings

Just out of curiosity, where are you going to college, and how does one do a culminating thesis on performance -- do you have to audition for and get a role on Broadway, or get 5/5 stars from a Professor Ebert as the equivalent of an "A" grade? I go to a very good school. Haha. Nothing pe...
