The Harry Potter effect in my MG/YA writing
Hi, My WIP is a MG book about a boy who is destined to save the world. He just also happens to be attending school in a converted castle in Ireland where all the students are placed into houses (academics, arts, business, etc). My crit group has pointed out the fact that I have a Boggart and a chara...

Re: Writer's Block: Ignore It?
When I face writer's block, I try to first change my physical surroundings. First, I change my location. I used to have a lot of success writing at my desk over lunch. When that stopped working for me, I created a quiet writing "office" area in my house that is off limits to anything excep...

Re: Have you ever gotten tired of reading your own novel?
Thank you for posting this. I have this image in my mind of all you "real" writers (as opposed to this "wannabe") reading through your ms with joy and satisfaction.
It's nice to know that everyone goes through the phases. It makes me feel like maybe I can do this after all.

writing podcast recommendations?
Hi, I'm looking to load up ye ole iPod with new podcasts geared towards writing. I need something, anything, to occupy my brain while plodding away on the treadmill through these bleak, cold days of hell they call winter in MN. Does anyone subscribe to or create podcasts that focus on writing? I've ...

Re: Hunger Games Movie
Oh, God. Kristin Stewart? sigh... However, I'd take Stewart over Megan Fox. Katniss isn't supposed to be a sex symbol. I agree with the other commenters that the movie gods should find a relative "unknown" for this role. I just finished book 3 last night. I will be interested to see how th...

Re: Hunger Games Movie
I read some comments debating Robert Downey Jr vs Hugh Laurie for Haymitch. My vote goes to House.

Re: Narrative time
Steph, as a science nerd (especially all things NASA), I think your story sounds very interesting. I also think the time question would make sense. You have to make sure your characters are "trained," but understandably, you don't want to spend so much time on those two years because that'...

Re: Printing a novel draft with Lulu?
So, is what I'm understanding that the problem arises if you A) assign an ISBN code, and B) make your work public (in theory, for purchase) on sites such as lulu.com or createspace.com? I have an ISBN code for my novel, but haven't opened it up for public purchase. Actually, it's sitting in my compu...

Re: critique group format?
Wow, thank you all so much for your thoughts! To answer a few questions... There are 5 of us in the group and I would say we are all eager novices. We met through the local writing center and also successfully completed NaNoWriMo last year. We thought to continue the momentum, we'd start a Nano read...

critique group format?
Hi, I'm starting a critique group with some colleagues from a fantasy writing class earlier this year. One of the people asked what format we should use for our critiques. When we were in class, we focused on the Two C's: Confused and Curious. As readers, we could mention places in the text we were ...

in search of a writing conference
Hello! I am interested in attending a writing conference in 2011 but it feels like everyone has a conference these days. Can anyone recommend a writing conference you feel is of "can't miss" caliber? My writing interests are more towards MG/YA action/fantasy, so I have already explored the...
