Re: Query: The Water in the River
I need help. I keep re-writing and coming up with the same thing. Do I need a little more, do I reveal a little more...do I quit and burn the thing? Dear…, Clara Herrington has always heard Name of river river speaking to her - she just didn't know it. Clara and Maggie haven't been friends for year...

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world
In a perfect world, there would be an amalgam of paper and e-book. The problem lies in the thinning of paper book publishers due to small bottom lines on their spredsheets. I have no doubt that quite a few small publishing houses will fail during this paper vs. e-book showdown. When this happens, an...

Re: Page Critique Friday 9/3/10
I think this is very well done. Dialogue heavy is fine when it's handled well and I believe you have good transition, the speakers are clearly identified. I am not a fan of the "Jim said", "Eddie observed" add-ons after a portion of dialogue. If this is your first page, you still...

Music that inspires you
I'm curious if anyone here listens to music when they write. What is your favorite song that inspires you? For me, "Cinnamon Girl" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, LIVE seems to get me writing when I can't get motivated? This song works really well when writing a female character's actions.....

Re: Do you have a new blog post?
Started a blog a while ago. Mostly to just write. Renamed the site after writing my MS. http://devinbriar.blogspot.com/
I plan to start posting things of interest... Anyone is welcome to contribute, just give me a link through here.

Re: First Page YA: opinions on voice and technique appreciated
Teenage angst has a character all its own. I think if you can hold her "it's all about me" anger, you have a compelling character, provided you balance it with attempts at understanding. Your character is obviously going to be deeper than this page. You present a moment of frailty that cam...

Re: Ask Nathan
Hi Nathan,
The first part is evey bit as strong as the second. I have the EDIT PEN out now and hope to get the "first part" down in the 130000 range. Still huge for a first time novelest I know, but that is where the story can be separated cleanly.

Re: Ask Nathan
Hi Nathan, Through feedback on my MS, I have split the book into two novels. Will the second book be short on words you ask? Nooooo. the original manuscript was finished (before major edit) at 273000. I found a perfect place to split the book, not halfway, but it still left the second book with 1150...

Writer's conferences?
Had a look at a few writers conferences. Are there any that are notable? How about the Southern California Writers Conference this September? Is attending a conference worthwhile?

Re: How much detail for readers outside the USA
This is what I was concerned with for the most part. I have a Senator who is extremely powerful and ever present in the story. She works on a number of committees in the Senate that we would recognize as important, but people outside the USA may not. I thought that these sections would be canidates ...

Thanks to Porthmeor Beach, whose page is below: TITLE: 'APOSTLE' GENRE: CRIME WORDCOUNT: 250 A white Transit van pulls into a long straight road by the town park, slows for the speed bumps, then indicates right. Pulls into a small car park in front of the two-story honeystone building that is Oakham...
Re: Valence
I read an interesting bit at http://www.cla.purdue.edu/english/theory/narratology The term focalize seemed to strike a cord. The term can be used in both writing and acting/cinema. "FOCALIZE (focalizer, focalized object): The presentation of a scene through the subjective perception of a charac...

How much detail for readers outside the USA
I recently received feedback on my MS from someone in England. The response included questions about words like filibuster, Senator, Bill (Proposed law, not the guy) etc... How important is the explanation of these terms for foriegn readers, let alone readers here in the U.S. ? Only a few of these t...
