Re: Forum game: Random facts about you

Random Facts: - When I was a kid, I wanted to grow up to be a bear. - I'm 27, but have been mistaken for 15 twice in the past three months. (And I'm regularly mistaken for 17-19.) - To keep this book-related... Whenever someone talks about the book Freakonomics, I can't help but think of an older dr...

Re: What's your price?

I think I could quit writing for the right amount of money, but then it would have to be an INSANELY huge amount of money in order to sustain the lifestyle that would draw me away from writing... With enough money, I'd spend at least half my year doing international volunteering and the other half o...

Re: Show Us Your Tabs

- Hotmail - Facebook - This forum (usually) - Another forum (usually) I found the trick to stay productive is to fool my eyes/brain. Of all the tabs, I leave Facebook as the one that's open -- and then I resize my window on Microsoft Word so that I can always see the notification bar at the top of F...

Re: Weird bookstores?

Whoops! Meant to post this in "All Things Books" -- Is there a way to move it over there?

Weird bookstores?

So... I heard about this bookstore in my city, pretty close to me, that sells brand new books for dirt cheap. I'm not too sure of the legality of the business if the guy sells brand new hardcovers for $10 or less and brand new paperbacks for $5 or less -- I don't know if these "fell off the truck" o...

Re: Rough draft process

I try to aim for the 80K - 100K range. However, with sci-fi, I tend to like reading things that are just a touch on the longer side, so my actual target is 90K-95K. It's been quite odd because I'm nearing the end of my second novel and, without even planning it, I have ended up within about 2K - 3K ...

Re: Your favorite first book

WARCHILD by Karin Lowachee.

Blew my away. It was my first juicy taste of (1) darker sci-fi, and (2) intensely character driven sci-fi.

Re: Who are our published Authors?

I guess I'll be the first to jump into this... All my previous publications are very small-scale. (Well, my fiction publication is large-scale-ish, but it was a contest.) So, though I've been published five times, I don't have an agent or anything. So I'm certainly not passing myself off as an exper...

Re: Internal thought in third-person

I spent most of my teen years reading Star Trek and they always used the italicized thoughts -- it's what I'm used to and it's what I prefer.

Re: LABOR DAY WEEKEND WRITE-OFF

Yay for you! I will not finish my goal -- which was to edit the whole thing and find beta readers. I've done considerable editing -- I'm currently on page 351 of 438 -- but will not have the energy to finish. I don't have beta readers lined up, either, but I know exactly who I'm going to approach. S...

Re: The writing process for a newbie

Writing can be tough -- but also a lot of fun! You'll find as many opinions on this forum as their are participants. There really isn't one solid set of advice or steps to follow. Everybody discovers their path on their own. So, don't worry that you haven't found your voice yet or you aren't sure if...

Re: How dark is TOO dark?

Like Margo said, it's all a matter of execution. (Interesting choice of words since we seem to be talking about killing...) I personally don't think that's too dark -- though I don't read any fantasy, so I don't know how that compares to dark fantasy. I was thinking of other dark things I've read......
