Re: The Introduction Thread

Hi, I'm experimenting with this place. I think I'm replying specifically to a posting by a fellow from Winnipeg. If this works, then I have a question, do all those folks who sit on the curb on Portage st. (been a while, perhaps I'm remembering the street name wrong), sit there freezing their butts...

Re: Any advice on my novel's feedback?

A principal distinction between event narrative and character narrative is the degree of internal complication. Event mostly external motivations; character mostly internal motivations. Narratives that are a weighted balance of both tend to merge the two into a coherent whole related to a central d...

Re: Any advice on my novel's feedback?

My problem is that I cannot imagine that anyone, anywhere, would be in the least bit interested in sexy talk and intense kisses if they have a broken, barely still living body... Keep at it! Perhaps knock down some of the intensity, like you said. Best of luck! Evelyn Thanks! I think I might have o...

Re: Any advice on my novel's feedback?

Hmm... Some excellent advice so far -- thanks! Re: Character and event narratives... I can see how that shift could be a factor in this... The novel in its entirety is very character-driven, though, with character narratives having about equal weight with event narratives. Perhaps in the ending, the...

Any advice on my novel's feedback?

First off -- I apologize for the length of this, but I think I need to fully explain the situation before I ask for the community's opinions… One of my beta readers -- the one who always gives me the most honest and most thorough critical feedback -- finished reading my novel and absolutely loved it...

October 20 -- Spirit Day -- Wear Purple

So... If you haven't yet heard... October 20 has been unofficially declared to be Spirit Day, where we are all asked to wear purple in memory of the six recent GLBT youth suicides. (I think, though, that since Spirit Day was declared, a seventh youth has taken his life.) It is important to remember ...

Re: YA books for a fifteen- year- old boy

I was not much of a reader till about age 14 or so... and even then I wasn't much of a reader till later in high school... My sister, who is now... oh geez... 20? yeah 20... wait, 21?... is not a reader at all. I think she's read five books of her own choice (meaning not for school). Oh, wait, most ...

Re: What Do Boys Want? thread ode to Mira, master question asker

Not to be too much of a damper, but you'll find as many opinions on what males want as there are males... or thereabouts. I read an article twenty minutes ago about how the traditional definitions of masculinity are changing, particularly with the rise and acceptance of meterosexuality. This may be ...

Re: Gender roles: The pressure of Prince Charming

Craig - arrggh. I had them in the wrong order. My apologies. I should be kicked out of the S.F. bay area. It's LGBTQQI, but then some people do say GLBTQQI. I sort of give up. I can't keep track. By this time next month, they'll have changed it again. Oh, and for anyone who doesn't know, the I for ...

Re: Gender roles: The pressure of Prince Charming

Hi Mira! I'm in a bit of a rush cuz I'm on a quick break at a conference, but I wanted to add that I really agree with you! I don't have the time to read over my previous post carefully, but I agree that "gender" is not so much a social construct as "gender norms" are... which is what you've explai...

Re: Gender roles: The pressure of Prince Charming

Personally, I feel like strict gender roles are potentially hurtful for everyone. Not only does it dictate how males and females are "supposed" to act and interact, but it completely disregards those who are struggling with their gender identity. Because gender is not always tied to biological sex,...

Re: What is the worst thing you have ever thrown up?

I'm enjoying this thread. I never throw up... I think the last time was almost 17 years ago... But, lemme tell ya, if you accidentally eat a piece of hot pepper in your stirfry and it burns like hell going down your throat... it'll burn like hell when it comes out the other end the next day. I thoug...

Re: I just discovered I have an I-pod and it plays music

Craig, that's phenomenal!!! Seriously almost full? You must have the widest musical taste imaginable. Good for you! Care to share a sampling of the diversity of your musical taste? Yup, I've got an 8-gig iPod and I'm currently sitting at 7.82-gigs of music. I have no apps, podcasts, pictures, video...

Re: I just discovered I have an I-pod and it plays music

My 8GB iPod is almost full. :-( I still don't have my entire CD collection on there and it leaves almost no room for new purchases. But I don't want to get a new one with larger memory because I like the size, shape, and weight of my iPod and would rather not have a larger, heavier, bulkier one. Sig...
