Tons of congratulations. :)

Re: QUERY: A Measure of Disorder (MG Fantasy) Vastly REVISED

Hi. Pardon my approach; I did small press editing for a few years, so I've got the nasty habit of offering feedback in the form of 'tear out stuff that doesn't work and plug my own words in.' Obviously you want something that has your voice, and some of the changes I made don't actually mesh up with...

Re: Query Help: Contemporary YA - Sitting on Rooftops

I liked the second version, but I want to link in some of the better elements of the third version. Here's my suggestion. (It might not work based on the timeline of the time capsule, but if it works I think it's a good way to work in dates and ages.) Dear Agent, Grayson wants things to be perfect a...

What credits are worth mentioning?

I'm trying to pitch a modern fantasy novel in which online video games play a major component. I don't have any print fiction credits, but a Dungeons & Dragons website is paying me to publish another fantasy novel of mine as a monthly column (www.enworld.org), and I have written two dozen role-playi...

Re: Length of novel issues

The first novel I tried to pitch to an agent was, heh, 175k. That's what happens when you spend 4 years working on one novel without planning it out first.

My latest comes out to 110k. I could probably trim away a bit here or there, but I'm satisfied with her now.

Re: Genre writing

More specifically, mainstream with romantic elements. Those are the ones with more complicated contemporary story lines, more characters, but at the heart there are the hero/heroine who fall happily in love at the end. Everyone together now......Awwwwwwwh. Awww. :) I'm a big sci-fi and fantasy fan,...

Re: Unreasonable Expectations

When my life is going well, I'm patient, even slow in my writing. Last year I was working on a romance novel inspired by some conversations I'd had with my girlfriend. Pirates, time traveling Nazis; y'know, the usual. I started in fall of 2008, got about half way done by the fall of 2009. Then she b...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

Interesting how many people are dying or being marked for death in these opening lines. But I don't normally judge by just the first line. I usually give a book at least a few paragraphs for a first impression, though to be honest I tend not to even look at a book unless someone else has told me the...

I hope I'm not the only one who read those with growing dread, afraid I would find something that resembles my writing. Then again, I don't think I'm good enough to write that wonderfully bad.

Re: Lost - Possible Spoilers!

Nathan, thanks for giving me another place to ponder Lost. Right now my friends gather around weekly to watch the show, then spend an hour afterward complaining about how it's gone off the rails. (Consider, at the beginning of this season, the plane flew over the Dharma shark, Fonzie-like.) But even...
