Re: What are you reading now?

WHITE HORSE by Alex Adams. I'm four pages in and practically tingling with excitement. Literary dystopian.

Re: Hours per Week?

Actual writing time? Probably 13 hours a week. Including outlining, reviewing notes (from crit partners, editor or myself), and researching, it's probably closer to 20 hours.

This is with a 40+ a week day job and a nuclear-powered toddler. ;)

Re: How long do you take to finish a draft/ WIP?

My first drafts take between one and six months. One month for a short novel (around 65K) in a world in which I've already worked. Six months for a new concept, aiming for a final product of around 90K words. Mind you, these are bare-bones drafts, and the concepts usually percolate in my head for a ...

Re: Seeking advice on YA project

She could try the YA Rebels, a diverse group of 9 or 10 active YA authors. I'm not sure if they have a website, but they're @yarebels on twitter and they're active on youtube. It would probably be a good jumping-off point.

Re: Contests/Magazines

Moni12, Have you tried searching at duotrope dot com? It's a database of periodicals, e-pub and print, including some anthologies, and you can search by types (short story, flash, novella) and genres. Super handy, and free (though you may donate to help with expenses). It's a great way to find a lis...

Hi Ryan,

I had not noticed that, but I will now look out for it. I'll let you know if I also receive a bump, starting....now. :)

Re: Fade to Black?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules for this. On the page/off the page depends on context and the tone of the story, Falls Apart. That being said, if you're writing with the intent of publishing in certain genres or with certain lines, there may be expectation in terms of whether sex sce...

Re: Titles

I usually draw up a list of themes, key phrases and words, or unique aspects of the characters/settings and then shift them around to try to find something that fits. I run lists of possibilities by my beta readers. It's amazing how people who have read the same words often focus on certain themes t...

Re: Best Dystopian Novels

Lucifer's Hammer is a good one. Slightly older, so the tech is different. The scene from that book that has forever remained in my head? A family trying to preserve books for surviving generations. :)

Re: Novel soundtrack?

I have trouble working with any noise around me, with the exception of airplane noise. I write very well when flying, except when my three-year old is along for the trip. Then I can't do anything except hold on for dear life and try to keep him off of other people's laps and out of the way of the dr...

Re: Advice Needed

Hi Cambridge,

I'm a bit confused by your post. Do you want to publish your own book of poetry, as in self-publish it, or are you interesting in attracting a publisher to publish with? These are two different things.
