Re: Does anyone else have this problem?

Ah. This old thing. I perform triage prior to editing. I take my own concerns and readers', distill them and make a list, then break the list into small, manageable parts. Spot or scene fixes come first, and these can take between 2 and 30 minutes at a time to figure out. Consistency and plot thread...

Thanks, Cheeky!

And congrats to you! Over the years, I've developed a very good impression of Samhain. This will go to print as well, yes?

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

I'm so pleased to finally be able to announce CARNIEPUNK, an anthology "which combines the carnival setting with the world of urban fantasy, a place of deception where monsters wait silently in the dark". My short story Recession of the Divine will be in it, alongside authors such as Rachel Caine, J...

Re: A full MS request from agent and publisher at same time...

Did you get a timeline on turnaround of the full from the agent, Lauren? It's not a problem to advise the second requesting party, whether agent or publisher, that someone is currently looking at the manuscript on an exclusive basis and - in the event they pass - you will send it to them. It can tur...

2) More importantly perhaps. Who does B&N serve? The reader, who (in numbers it seems) requests the company operate in a certain way. Or the Writer, who makes money through B&N and without whom B&N has no product. Shareholders come first and foremost, as they do with any publicly-traded company. Lo...

Re: Can you send revisions once you have already sent a full MS?

Hi, I have a couple of questions about agent etiquette. I had a full MS request from Susan Ginsburg. I sent it off about 3 weeks ago. Since then I had some feedback from a publisher who asked me to revise my first chapter and resubmit it. So my questions are: 1. Should I tell the agent about the pu...

Re: Sending a Self-Published Book to a Potential Agent

There is no mention of "completed books" in their submission guidelines; just the first three chapters of a manuscript, a synopsis, and a bio. Is this because they don't typically receive finished projects, or because they would prefer not to? Agents always want to see finished manuscripts . They d...

Re: When writing isn't your full-time job.

I hear you, Regan. It's a challenge. I work 40 hours a week plus a few "social" work obligations a month that wipe out entire evenings, and I've got a husband and a four year old. I used to average around 40,000 words a month, plus edits for books and promotion for books under contract. I managed th...

Re: When an agent says "yes" to your second manuscript

I don't think there's any way to answer this hypothetical. In the event it occurs, have the discussion with the agent. If she believes in book #2, she may be willing to put the time and effort into helping you to get book #1 into shape. Alternatively, by the time this occurs, you may have advanced i...

Re: How do you know if your writing is any good?

It's sort of a terrible thing that it's hard to judge the quality of your own writing. I've been sharing my writing in public lately, and it's scary. I write something, and I really can't tell if anyone else will like it or not. Until I get some feedback, and I'm totally on tenterhooks until I do, ...

Re: Weird google phrases for your blog

"Why don't Mongolians cry?" once brought someone to my blog, after which I searched it top to bottom to try to figure out how they'd gotten there. :D
