Re: Ask Nathan

After reading queries and manuscripts and books practically all day every day for over seven years, the projects I know I want to take on and am confident I can sell stand out like the author is writing in a different color. Even then I can't always get them through the path to publication. Which c...

Re: Good article on how print will not die

My daughter is three and she loves computers (she has her own laptop- an old one that was too unreliable for use on anything important). But, she also loves books. When learning to read, kids like holding the book, they like looking at color pictures and flipping the pages to their favorite place. S...

Re: Query Letter Critique

Not a professional and have yet to even write my own but my initial take: The strays kinda confused me. They are important, but I am not really sure if they are human or what. The present tense is the correct tense, but it is too present tense for me. Now he sits in a bar, now he knows the location....

Re: Foreign Language

My character "cusses" in Chinese. I never translate, mostly because really all he is calling the guy is a dim sum dish, which for a long list of cultural reasons in my book is extremely offensive and people who know the dish can think about it and go, yeah, that makes sense. But if I were to try to ...

Re: Length of novel issues

My current novel first draft was 55k. Then I realized, wow, that so does not work- I skipped the most important scenes (some problems with being in the wrong viewpoint character at the wrong moments). So, I went through and added those- which moved me up to 70k. And then I started editing for reals ...

Re: Attachment to your first draft?

Reading through my first draft, I will mark specific lines that I think are worth keeping. That might only be like 3-4 lines in a chapter though. I then rewrite the chapter, without looking at my first draft. And then I look at those lines I liked before and think if there is any way that they would...

Re: The Ghost Posts a Query - Yikes and Away!

I agree with a lot of what other people said (2nd paragraph confusing), but a fairly minor point they didn't make- when it says her FBI surveillance, I was uncertain on first reading if she was watching the FBI or they were watching her. The FBI began their surveillance of her, blah blah blah, or Un...

Re: Have you ever been inspired by a song?

I have two future novel ideas that were initially inspired by songs, but both are still at the notes stage. I was listening to a song recently though and it was like, omigosh- that is so my character! So, that might help with the rewrites, but not really inspiration on that.

Re: Beautiful Language in TV Shows

I thought BSG's first episodes were amazingly well done. The series went downhill from there, unable to sustain such amazing levels of awesomeness. :)

Re: Do you have a rejection contingency plan?

http://www.annemini.com/?p=8393 Author!Author! has been doing a series on publishing and this article looks at smaller publishing houses. Supposedly tomorrow we'll be getting self pubbing, so that should be interesting. Here is link to self pubbing article. It makes a good point over control of thin...

Re: Beautiful Language in TV Shows

I love Supernatural. I think they have done an amazing job at the character's and their relationships. The dialogue has tons of clever references, though mostly like classic rock (the boys aren't spending much time watching tv these days). For me, the big problem is that it is on at a bad time so I ...

I liked the second one best- but both seemed great to me (with my complete lack of experience in writing queries).

Re: Kill my Query

I liked the first blurb in your last post (Since the murder of his parents a year ago, twenty-six-year-old Lucas Fowler has been avoiding death more than living life). I thought it made him more likable, less serial killer. But that' just my opinion- I haven't really started working on queries or re...

Re: Do you have a rejection contingency plan?

casnow- When I started writing, it was just for fun and I thought hey, if it doesn't work out, I'll just self pub and get my friends to buy. The problem is, as I have thrown myself into writing, now, I want to do this for real (I have written stories since I was a child, even took a college course i...

Re: Looking for a little help on getting started

I have not yet done an agent search, but here is a website I have seen that might be what you are looking for. http://agentquery.com/ My first list of agents will come from my own bookshelf. I am going to go through all the authors that write in my genre and figure out their agents. Of course, my fi...
