Re: Creating Names

I use online baby name pages. I tend to pick a nationality for my people that fit my world and go with that for all characters of that nationality. If two countries have a long shared history, they might share a nationality of a similar one (for example, the site I use has Indian and Sanskrit and so...

Re: Critique Group Question

I think that you can comment on your viewpoint, but respectfully and humbly. Use statements that distance the criticism. "in my opinion" is a good phrase. Also, don't say this is the only way, this is the best way. Something like, when I was reading this, I thought, wow, it would be so awesome if th...

Re: Questions for agents

A few I remembered that seemed important- what is your method for submission (ie, do you submit to 20 places at once or one at a time)? What happens if you leave agency or quit the business or die (might need better phrasing)? Are you signing with agent or agency? How much involvement will agent hav...

Re: Tone down a gay character?

Seamus, part of it may be knowing enough people from the region or culture. Thinking about accents, I found Princess and the Frog far more amusing because I know people who talk just like that. But the characters were more than the stereotypes- for example the firefly may speak like a Bayou hick, bu...

I do soundtracks- except usually it is just one or two songs that sum up the book (or the theme or whatever).

Re: Do short story creds matter?

If you like shorts and you can write them, then do it. But if you hate reading short stories and you hate writing them, then I don't see what benefit they will do for you. I rarely enjoy writing short stories. So, I don't. I don't read them, I don't write them. Except, every once in a while, I'll ge...

Re: On pacing and introducing main characters

I have a POV character that is introduced 100 pages in (novel is about 85-90k- not sure cause for me editing makes longer). His love interest is introduced 12k words later (so like 50 pages later). I justify this because that POV character is not really a main character, even though he gets his own ...

Re: NaNoWriMo

casnow- they do have a Young Writer's Program, where they have changed the word goals depending on age. I think for most high schoolers it is 50k, but for like first grade it is 1000. If you go the nano page, they have a link to that program.

Tone down a gay character?

Arizona gal so still near the elite left coast, but limo at prom was common. As far as homosexuality, first gay guy I knew, I didn't have any issues with (except i thought it was totally uncool for him to have a hicky contest with the girl his roomie was massively in love with and working to get up ...

Re: Are dialogue tags really that bad?

Kniki, for standardized testing, I cringe when I have to tell the kids to replace said and use more adverbs, which is why I usually stick to the math side. :) But that is what the test grades on and the company I tutor for wants the students to do well so we teach to the test. While I think in gener...

Re: Are dialogue tags really that bad?

I read through some of my fav books and looked at dialogue tags. Lots of muttering, whispering, shouting, ordering, growling, etc. I think it worked, because I didn't notice it until I was actively looking for it. I thought it was all part of building the scene. However, none of the books I looked a...

Re: NaNoWriMo

I LOVED doing nano next year. I whipped out my first draft in November and have been rewriting and editing it like crazy. I think it showed me what works for me as a writer. When I get stuck, I head to write or die just to get words on the page. I used to obsess far too much. My first draft needed t...

Re: Does your MS go up or down in size?

My formal training in writing is a science writer (which I hate with a passion and actually all things science so I don't do that anymore) but even then I was told that I was too brief (and science writers are always being told by their bosses to tighten it). So, my current novel, I wrote the end af...

Re: On Combat

Thanks! that does help. I actually took fencing for a year, but it seems like that really doesn't relate much to an actual battle- esp since my characters fight with two handed swords, multiple opponents, uneven ground, lots of noise, and it actually hurts when you get stabbed. That and I have to ma...

Re: On Combat

Ok- I have a fight with a guy who is massively outnumbered, but is super skilled- significantly better than they are. The outnumbered would be like 7 to one. I figure, they can't all just run and attack (they want to live) so they come one or two at a time. I give no specific details, or time refere...
