Re: Ask Nathan

Nathan... What are your thoughts on Publishers Marketplace? Is it a useful tool for writers? I subscribed to it when I was looking for an agent to see who was selling what, and I'm trying to decide if I should sign up again as my book is on submission. Do you think it's helpful to authors or will it...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I found my old diary from when I was 10-13 and posted some of the entries I had written. My writing started young, although it seemed my skills might have developed at a later age!

I love this, because I feel like it often is very quiet but in a way that you don't want it to get loud. I'm an English teacher, it also appeals to me too! Ha!

Re: Blog Traffic...Creating a Traffic Jam

What are your thoughts about the length of blog posts? Sometimes I feel like mine are too long (approximately 5 paragraphs). Is is better to do shorter posts? Longer? A bit of a mix? Or if the content is good, should it not matter? What do you prefer when you're reading blogs?

Re: Literary YA--What is it?

I think literary YA has a lot to do with the language and a slower pace so the writer is able to linger on the language and complexity of theme. I would classify the following contemporary books as literary YA: Jellicoe Road (Melinda Marchetta) A Certain Slant of Light (Laura Whitcomb) As Simple as ...

Re: Have you ever been inspired by a song?

I have a whole list of songs that I listened to over and over when I was writing my book. Most of them were depressing, but I needed to be in a sad mood to write a lot of my scenes! I had a playlist called "Sad Songs to Write to" on my ITunes and my boyfriend found it thinking I was crazy! Here's th...

Re: What writing disorder do you suffer from?

A herniated disk! I sometimes stick scenes into my novel that don't move the story along. They "bulge" out when I go through and edit...I can instantly tell what doesn't fit and slows down the flow of the story. Ouch!

Re: Ask Nathan

Hi Nathan.... My book is about to go on submission next week. I have created a blog and talk about my work a lot (the blog is writing related). I have talked about my book, but I have only posted one paragraph of my book on the blog. If I am trying to make a point or show an example, can I put a sma...

Re: Sharing Someone's Story

I think you just need to be honest with everyone. Talk to her the same way you presented this to us. Let her know that her story intrigues you and you want to preserve it. I think honesty is the most important thing. If you have good intentions, she'll see that and if she wants her story told, she'l...

Re: Books and Movies Based on Them

Rick.... I totally agree about The Body being made into Stand by Me. It's a great novella and a great movie. I think that's one of the best done books to films that I have seen. Has any one seen The Lovely Bones yet? I went yesteday, and while I was excited to see how the book could translate into a...
