Re: Author / Book Marketing

I don't know how Nathan feels about it.....so, I'm saying this rather tenatively, but I think a marketing thread could be a good idea.

Good luck, Rick!

Re: Query Review and some helpful hints

I like this query. Like the last paragraph and how you worded it.

Thanks for sharing it. :)

Re: Query for a Memoir

Ryan, I'm not an expert by any means, I just read agent's blogs. But I'll dive in and tell you what I think. Memoir is labeled 'non-fiction'. I believe it's seen as a form of narrative non-fiction. So, the query process for memoir is very different than that for fiction. You do write a query letter,...

Re: Peer Review of a Query

Cool - I like the changes. I think you're on the right track. :)

I'd tighten abit more, but I think you are on your way. Don't hesitate to sit with it abit, too. It's okay to let things gel...

Good luck!

Rick - good luck! Love the cover - great colors.

Thrillers scare me.....but I'll consider it. :)

Re: "The Voice of this Generation" Who do you think it is?

This is interesting. My answer is sort of cheating, but I wonder if the 'voice' of this generation won't be any one author, but Twitter/Facebook/Blogs, etc. This is the first generation to have such on-line access to writing with an almost immediate audience. It will be very interesting to see how t...

Re: Preface and backstory.

For what it's worth, my feedback is: I wouldn't worry about something being 'frowned upon'. Do what feels best to you in your story. If it really is a problem, you'll get feedback about that after the fact, and it will be easier to make changes that fit well with the story. But it may not be a probl...

Re: When I grow up I want to be...

Writing for me....well, I always knew I would write in mid-life. I knew it would take me that long to learn what I needed to say. I just always knew that... Now, whether that was a self-fulfilling prophecy or not, I don't know. :) But a few years ago, I started to get this drumming inside me: it's t...

Re: Outline or Out of the Mist?

Me too. I'm out of the Mist. Definitely. It's abit scary to write that way; it requires alot of trust. I sort of wish I was an outline type of writer, but I'm not. On the other hand, I work on stories over time. I had this one picture book that literally took me 10 years to finally conceptualize and...

Re: Query Help needed

From what I can see, this is a gripping story. Topical, too, with gang violence, drugs, loss. I think one thing to be aware of: a story about a gay latino that ends in tragedy may not sell to everyone. I wouldn't assume that rejections are solely based on the query. I might really research agents wh...

What author would you have dinner with/what would you ask?

This question is an oldie but goodie. What author would you have dinner with, and what would you ask them? For fiction, I'd pick J.K. Rowling. I'd ask her about her plotting technique - amazing - and writing under pressure. For non-fiction, I'd love to have dinner with Oprah. I don't think she's wri...

Re: The New Website

Goodness. I'm never going to get anything done. I should be studying for my final right now. You are a bad man, Nathan Bransford. And I thank you for it. :) You might want to create a separate forum for queries. If you're really serious, those will build up very fast. Totally up to you though, I'm s...

J. - I completely understand why you'd be nervous. But I think Nathan's bunch are a pretty respectful and helpful group. :) I like the title, and I really like the underlying story of someone trying to choose between a safe life in isolation, or all the difficult emotions that come with human connec...

Re: Pitch for WIP

Jude - I feel nervous giving feedback on a WIP. It's so risky - other people can't know your vision.

Trust your gut, and see where it takes you. That would be my advice.

Follow the story. Who knows where it will go.

Re: Awesome YouTube Videos

I used this in a recent presentation at grad school. It was about terminating counseling relationships - to add a fun touch at the end.

Now, I can't stop watching it. I shall inflict it upon you, should you be so brave:
