Re: New vs experienced agents

I recently about a new author's query process (sorry, I forget who it was), but she said she had an A and B list of agents to query from. The A list were the agents she really, really wanted. The B list were the agents, she liked and thought she'd like to work with who were maybe a little more likel...

Re: At the can't-look-at-my-book phase

Taking a break is actually supposed to improve your ability to edit. By taking a break (and maybe reading some other works in the same genre), you gain more distance from your WIP and, hopefully, more objectivity. If you jumped right back into editing, you'll still think, "Oh, I loved this part!" or...

Re: Queries that got picked

This is a wonderful resource. Writer's Digest has a very similar series, which is not limited to YA novels. I think they're really tried to hit upon all types of genres and sub-genres out there. It's called "Successful Queries". Here's the link: http://www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-lit...

Re: When writing isn't your full-time job.

I do have one new suggestion: If you're so exhausted at the end of the day, consider shifting your day so that you get up much earlier and have an hour or so to write in the morning. In the morning you're nice and fresh, and, once you get used to the new hours, you might find you're really productiv...

Re: When do you seek outside opinion?

That's actually evolving for me. At first, I'd give the novel to my sister or mother once I had a first draft. Now, however, I've realized it's probably not worth their while until I have a second draft because I can at least make it more easy to read throughout the course of the second draft, and, ...

Re: How many YA genres are there?

Do you want to tell us what you think the important elements of your book are? Then we might be able to take a shot at helping you define your genre. Of course, you could always stick to one of the generic genres: fantasy, science fiction, romance, western, etc. And if you're really, really struggli...

Re: Time to start a blog?

Also, from one of the other posts in this Forum, I found out about Sommer's (see her response above) "School of Blogging" series of posts on all things to know about blogging. It's at http://sommerleigh.com/college-of-blogging.

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hello, All! I'm Sarah. I've always loved and used and referred to Nathan's blog, but I never really visited the forums. Then in one of his last posts he was like, "And if you want to join the Forums, click here", and I had to ask myself, "Why haven't I ever done that?" And so I did. I write MG and Y...

Re: Learn a Language to Procrastinate

To be fair, they do say that their French version is in Beta. I'm coming at this with absolutely zero experience in Spanish, so whatever I learn will be more helpful than nothing (since I'm not interested in paying for Rosetta Stone. I looked at some of the Rosetta Stone reviews on Amazon, and many ...

Re: MG Query: Under Sentinel Guard

Won't somebody please tell me whether they think my new second paragraph is actually better? I edited it into my original post b/c I thought that would be easiest to read and compare.

And to chounzet, LizV, and hagenpiper, thank you very much!

Re: I recommend blogger (vs wordpress)

I started my blog with blogger b/c it's so easy to get to since I'm always logged into my gmail account. I do have to say, though, blogger does have a very limited number of templates to choose from. I think you can get a prettier blog with wordpress, but, in the end, isn't the blog about reading yo...

Re: Time to start a blog?

I've looked into this a lot, and it sounds like the earlier the better (I actually only just started my blog a few weeks ago). But it is a really good idea to know where you want to go with your blog. I started one blog over a year ago that I just completely abandoned. I didn't know what I wanted to...

Learn a Language to Procrastinate

So, because I wasn't already doing enough things that keep me from writing, I decided to try to learn Spanish. Honestly, it's something I've always wanted to do, but I just found out about this (FREE!) online program called duolingo.com that is actually really good at incorporating both written and ...

Dear Ms. Agent, Taj is a professional mercenary who has grown to believe that war is a way of life, and Sarv is another mercenary who has recently joined the profession. Taj and Sarv develop camaraderie while they are at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Taloqan, one of few cities in the north of no...

Re: What do you do when an idea takes over?

I've definitely abandoned projects after I'm well into them. I think that was actually a good thing, but ONLY if you will have the tenacity to come back to your projects (although, honestly, as long as you don't do it too often, some projects just aren't as good as others and maybe should be abandon...
