Re: Questions for Outliners

The only outline that's ever helped me is the snowflake method--about 10 steps that guide writers through the process. It not only helps organize my thoughts, but makes sure I have enough conflict to drive the novel (because if I don't, it will become apparent by the second or third step). From star...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

Okay, I'll jump in and tell you how I feel. Up until the last 50 pages, this was my favorite book in the series. Then, well, the last 50 pages happened. I feel that Collins switched gears from simply telling a fabulous, entertaining story to trying to teach me a lesson: War sucks, and everyone suffe...

Re: what is your aim of writing??

To challenge myself, for fun, and maybe for a wee bit of escapism.

Edit: After a tough week with the kids, I'd like to change my answer to pure escapism with a dash of wish fulfillment.

Re: Referring to Mom and Dad in third person?

Thanks, Polymath, that's really helpful.

One more question: If I use a more familiar term like Daddy in the style of your example, does that mean I forfeit the ability to refer to him as "her father"? It seems logical that if I establish a more intimate tone, then I'd have to be consistent.

Re: Referring to Mom and Dad in third person?

Here's where it sounds squirrely to me: Jane waved her arms in front of her father. "Dad, can you tear yourself away from World of Warcraft for a minute?" Dad just stared at the computer screen and grunted. *** It doesn't sound right. "Her dad just stared at the computer screen and grunted" sounds b...

Referring to Mom and Dad in third person?

When writing in first person, the narrator can say "I looked at my mother" or "I looked at Mom." But what about third person? "She looked at her mother" sounds fine, but "She looked at Mom" sounds weird. At the same time, I don't want to refer to parents by their first names while in a child's POV, ...

Re: Bestsellers that don't live up to the hype

Aaaaaah! I love the Outlander books! Love, ye ken? James Fraser is one of my verra, verra favorite fictitious men. I don't know if it was a bestseller, but I despised Life of Pi. Reading it was like slow torture. I also loathed The Lost Symbol with the fire of a thousand suns (no Dan Brown hate, tho...

Re: The Time Traveler's Wife was painful to read

Wow, I loved it!

The only thing that made me wrinkle my nose was teen-aged Claire always trying to seduce middle-aged Henry. Other than that, I was hooked. Even cried at the end...not something that happens often when I read.

Re: the Agent you came to the dance with

I hear 'ya, Ink, but why wouldn't agent #1 ask for an exclusive during revisions? That just doesn't make sense to me. ETA: It reminds me of one of Nathan's blog posts. He requests an exclusive before working with an author during revisions because the idea of an author going with another agent afte...

Re: the Agent you came to the dance with

I have zero experience with literary agents, but it seems to me that by not asking for an exclusive or offering a contract, agent #1 was basically saying "Meh, I like your work, but not enough to commit." If agent #2 makes an offer and you like him/her, I don't see any reason to feel guilty about ac...

Re: Ask Nathan

Hi, Nathan. I'm having genre troubles, and I could use your guidance. When I sat down to write my novel, I was writing for myself. In retrospect, I suppose not having a specific audience in mind was my first mistake. I assumed I was writing science fiction--the story of an eighteen-year-old high sch...

Re: Avoiding the info-dump

Here's how my info-dump scene goes down: MC has just received an opportunity to work closely with an alien. She's a bit wary--but not enough to turn down the money, which she desperately needs--so she agrees. Now she has to break the news to her boyfriend, who is completely opposed to any human-alie...
