Queries that got picked

So I've begun to follow a blog, YA Highway, and wanted to share this "query series" they do where they choose a published book and have the accepted query letter posted along with the agent's reasons why he/she was drawn to it. There are a bunch of them and it's really helping me re-shape my own que...

Re: Learn a Language to Procrastinate

I can read and make sense of almost anything written in French. It's speaking/writing it myself -- especially verb conjugations -- and understanding when someone is speaking at normal speed.

Re: Learn a Language to Procrastinate

Ehhh... the very first intro page when it introduces the little owl had me hover over the words for their translation and did a literal French translation of "Hello, my name is Duo" instead of the correct "Bonjour, je m'appelle Duo." That makes me question it's legitimacy. I've wanted to get into Ro...

Re: Character Flaw

She doesn't necessarily have to be overweight if she has just one food obsession. Granted, I don't know what it is, but there are some people who can just eat and no, maybe they aren't model-skinny, but they are of average weight for their height.

Re: Question about using real places in WIPs

The cover was almost a dead ringer for the bottle so I get why they wanted it changed. Though huge bravo to their legal and PR departments for being so civil and generous about it. The label design is their trademark and the book was infringing off of it. Another similar topic, I read a hilarious tu...

Re: Question about using real places in WIPs

Lucas does not own the word Droid -- he owns it in relation to movies and robots. Verizon owns the word Droid in relation to cell phones/devices. It doesn't necessarily matter how much clout a company has when it comes to using their product/name. In Fifty Shades of Grey (yes yes, I read them, hang ...

Re: At the can't-look-at-my-book phase

Thank you for calming me down. I'm going to definitely take all of the advice and let the book chill out for a bit. Thanks guys!

At the can't-look-at-my-book phase

I finished my book over a month ago and am currently editing it. But I don't want to. I literally have lost all desire to continue to edit it. I haven't done anything for over a week. Has anyone else gone through/is going through the same time of thing? I don't know how to find my drive again.

Re: Are Publishers Going Too Far?

There are contemporary spoofs made of them already like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies....I don't see the difference between adding sexual references to it or adding zombies to it

Re: Question about using real places in WIPs

Haha Forks was the first thing I thought of. For that reason though, I actually decided to make up the suburban town name my book takes place in, and though in the book it is outside of Baltimore, it's actually mirrored after my own hometown outside of NYC. Some of the book does take place in Baltim...

Re: Tears

There isn't any part of my book where I want the readers to be driven to tears....there's death, but the plot and pace of the book aren't written to "mourn" a character. The end is one of those WTF?!?!?! cliff hangers that I always hated in books. Now that it's my book I'm all wahahaha!

Re: Facebook

As an unpublished author, I don't feel as though making a FB page is all that necessary. I live in L.A. where every "actor" "writer" and "director" I know has their own "page" and really, as lovely as these people are, I'm not going to like all of their pages because I don't want to know how every s...

Re: What are you reading now?

No, much less sci-fi. I actually didn't even think of the comparison until you mentioned it. No aliens, space travel. I tried to do the math and I think it's only about 100 years from now because a middle-aged character mentioned his father playing World of War Craft. This isn't really a spoiler but...
