Re: Rejection: how do you know if it's the idea or the query?

I've also heard that agents and editors don't vet ideas beforehand because so much depends on the writing. Even if they love the idea, if the writing isn't up to scratch they won't necessarily bite. Likewise, excellent writing can carry a not-so-exciting idea.

Great post Polymath. Everyone writing a query should read and consider this.

Re: Action, anyone?

After reading lots of first pages, I've found most are better when they have action. It draws you in straight away and makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. There are exceptions of course. I've read first pages that don't have much going on but are still engaging, but as a ge...

Re: Tone down a gay character?

I agree with everyone saying to leave your the characters the way they are. I think aspiring_x was right in that if people have a problem, they're going to have a problem no matter how you write it. And I don't know where your beta reader grew up, but I'm all the way over in Australia and renting a ...

Re: Query: Elena Starfire: Space Pilot (YA sci-fi)

I'm no expert, but I think this is a really well-written query. You tell us enough about the protagonist that we understand her motivations, what she has to do and the stakes if she fails (her friends and possibly herself die if she can't co-operate with her enemy). You tell us enough to get us inte...

Re: First Five Pages (Contemporary YA)

I do agree there's maybe a little much backstory for the beginning of the novel. It's obviously important we know some backstory otherwise we'll have no idea why she's so nervous about the meeting, but I don't think we need too many details at this point beyond that there was a close group, who was ...

Re: Query: Too Enchanted *Final draft of query letter?*

I haven't read your earlier versions so I'm coming to this one with fresh eyes. Dear Agent, Tirian is an enchanted toad with magical powers living in the forest kingdom of Garn, home of the Enchanted Ones. But when a vengeful enchantress turns Tirian into a human, he must leave the quiet safety of h...

Re: Comfort books

I don't reread hardly at all because there are so many new books to get to and because I have a strong memory that makes rereading boring in most cases. The biggest exception is gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson just because it puts me in awe every time. What a solid writer, and funny, and beauti...

Re: Words Per Day

Wow, I feel so totally inadequate! A really productive session for me would be 1000 words. Generally, it's more between 400 and 700, although I only work on fiction first thing in the morning, for about 1-1.5 hours. I try not to self-edit too much during the drafting phase, but sometimes I can't he...

Re: What are you reading now?

I'm reading 'At Risk'. The main character is an MI5 agent and it's written by Stella Rimington, the former head of MI5. She's got some nice platform going there! Oh and the book is good too, so far.

Re: Words Per Day

When I'm writing a first draft, I try for 1000 words each weekday and 2500 words per weekend day. Like Marilyn, when I'm getting towards the end of a manuscript and trying to wrap it up I'll try and do more - I'll choose one weekend day when I know I'll have no interruptions and aim for 7000 words o...

Yep, that works well! Now I want to know how they help him... but I suspect that's info better left out of the query :-) You know, entice the agent to read on and all that.

Re: Forum Suggestions?

I don't have any ideas of my own, but I wanted to second a few. I like the idea of having sub-categories, especially on the Finding an Agent section. I also like the idea of being able to critique people's first pages, etc. And the Ask Nathan thread is very interesting!

Re: Query - The Butterfly Key- revision now on page 6

Hi Tycoon, I haven't read any of your other revisions of this query, so I'm coming to it fresh. It read well to me. I don't think you need the first sentence though. The information in it is mostly conveyed in the next two sentences. Just add his last name to the second sentence and maybe the fact h...

Re: Ask Nathan

Username - Australian agents typically ask people to send the first three chapters with their query. I'm not sure where you're based or whether you'd want an international agent, but that's one option if you want to include more than five pages.
