Re: Whom do you write like?

This is addictive! I just plugged in two separate, random parts from my WIP and got Chuck Palahnuick and Isaac Asimov. Guess my next novel should be about scientists fighting each other.

Re: How do you celebrate finishing a book?

I got a massage voucher for Christmas from some friends, and I decided to use it after finishing the next round of revisions. It was a really nice way to reward myself, so I decided to do something similar at the end of each round. I then happened to win a facial voucher, so that was going to be the...

Re: TRINITY, an urban fantasy query

1. I liked the coffee jokes and I don't even like coffee. I thought they showed good voice. 2. I didn't care about the acquaintance but a death does raise the stakes. I don't think a brief mention that someone died In the break-in would hurt. 3. The only thing I wondered about reading this query was...

Re: Do you use QueryTracker?

I'm planning on querying towards the end of summer and have been wondering: Does QueryTracker really help? I'm not a part of the site yet, but I've looked it over and to me it seems a bit confusing. (Might just be me, though) Wondering what people's experiences have been using it and if you think i...

Re: What you want to write VS what you write

I think this is reasonably common, at least from comments I've read. The story might be what you planned but the feel of the story is different. That's how my manuscript has turned out. It's got quite a different feel from what I envisaged in the planning. But it's still a decent story (I hope) and ...

Re: Why do you reread books?

Reading is like travelling. It's fun to go new places. There's the thrill of discovery and the feeling of adventure. But it's also nice to revisit places and have the joy of rediscovering old haunts. It's easier and more relaxing. And that's why I re-read. As others have said, there's also the pract...

Re: Start with THE HOBBIT or FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?

It's also difficult when many of the characters and objects have three different names used interchangeably. I read LOTR as a kid, and while I loved it, this habit drove me insane. 'Hang on, who's this character? I've never heard his name before but everyone acts as though they know him... ohhh, it...

Re: Query Help Needed: ZOMBIE RABBIT

I'm certainly no expert, but after reading lots of agent blogs hopefully I've picked up some tips I can pass on. If I were an agent I'd request pages based on the title alone, but anyway :-) Dear Agent: I am searching for an agent This is redundant. You wouldn't be querying otherwise. to represent m...

Re: Query WARRIOR-MONKS

I liked the idea of a reluctant juvenile delinquent. I think that description gives us a good insight into Lee's character. I also think you've given yourself a valuable critique already about the backstory. Just from reading your query it sounds like all the events described take place in the story...

Re: Query : GEMINI CURSED - paranormal romance

I love your first sentence. It really hooked me. I was wondering why she needed to find love every 23 years, then the part about the five centuries really piqued my curiosity. It sounds like you have some interesting plot points in there too.

Re: Action, anyone?

I think the 'start with action' advice probably applies mostly to debut authors. If you've written a few books and built up a fan base, they're less likely to want to be hooked immediately and more willing to wait for a payoff because they've read your books in the past and enjoy them, and know that...

Thanks Marilyn, and congratulations! Your encouragement is exactly what we on this board need to hear - a reminder that not every author (in fact most) don't have an easy road to publication :-)

Re: Critique Group Question

That's great advice Polymath, and I will endeavour to take it in future. It's so easy to point out the faults in other people's work, not through a sense of malice, but because you can see what you think is wrong and want to help them fix it. But your post is a good reminder that there are many ways...

Re: Query: NO GOOD DEED paranormal thriller

I've heard agents say not to include the ending, that the purpose of a query is to entice them to read it and make them wonder what will happen. But I agree with Paul that you need some sort of mention of an ending here. You don't have to say how it ends but I think it would read better if you prese...

Re: Query Critique - Overcast Shadows - First Try

Dear Awesome Agent, I chose to submit to you because of your wonderful taste in Young Adult, and because you represent a few novels like “” and “” that I have read and enjoyed. Two half brothers forcefully separated at birth. One human and one Lasserta. One turned to protecting his valley as a seek...
