Re: YA Query (Rejected 4x)

You need to give people a reason, the hook, for why your book stands out from the rest. So based on the age of your character alone, I get that this is YA... so that's good, and you want to state that directly in the query However, It reads very cold, without feeling or voice, which you want to evok...

Re: Controversial thoughts about the school shooting today

I'm a father and husband before I am a writer. I'm also unable to shake the thought of losing a child, and the unfathomable loss and sorrow that would bring, but I am glad that while there are debates raging back and forth blaming different aspects of our lives, that so many have chosen to focus on ...

Re: Why do you want to be published or why do you write?

I write because I never knew I had an itch until I scratched. I had a story I had to get out, and there were only so many times I could talk about it before family and friends told me to write it, so I did. It was only then I realized that writing is so much more than putting thoughts and words down...

Re: When You Have to Create a Whole New Realm

Brenda, I'm with you there. Imagining things can be a long and tedious process. I often do my best while thinking about it on a drive or in the shower. You have free reign, though, as the creator. If you want there to be green soupy rain coming from all directions, that's it, it exists. The limits a...

Re: Are critiques,

Critiquing is a delicate process. You HAVE to be honesty, but honest and tact can go together. If someone is bored, or otherwise disinclined, realize that will hurt your chances of getting published or having someone read to the last page. Style issues aside, some books are just not for everyone. I ...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

As it stands with my WIP, and the insights I have made in my process (I hope it is fixed now), I may be on that NaNo bandwagon. I hope it still counts, as I have spent a ton of time on it already.

Re: Newly Revised Query for YA Supernatural -- Updated

Thanks, Shipple. I may go with 'All four Princes' (Because, based on that, there are obviously 4) There's also a council, but i don't want to get into too detailed specifics. Unfortunately, this, like many queries doesn't allow enough freedom and room to truly get the entire breadth of the story out...

Re: The hardest part of the novel

I will agree the first 20 pages are the worst for me. In fact, the first chapter, five pages, let's call it, are awful to get into. They set the tone, the hook, etc and I sweat them so much. It can take 2 days to write 500 words for me, yet yesterday, I wrote 1700 in an hour, ending in the 130 page-...

Re: Newly Revised Query for YA Supernatural

Thanks for the comments, Kristie. I do want to talk about the suicide, though, I did try to soften it a bit. I understand your change suggestions at the beginning, but I don't quite think they fit perfectly. I was trying to get across that he, for a while, no longer has the bruises because things ar...

Newly Revised Query for YA Supernatural -- Updated

Sixteen-year-old Lucas Fuller barely recognizes his face without cuts and bruises. Bullies can smell fear, and he's never had the balls to fight back. When the girl he's madly in love with rejects him to stay with her abusive boyfriend, it's the final blow to a life too riddled with pain and loss to...

Re: What makes a dystopia?

I agree that the war/chaos doesn't make it dystopian. If I wasn't clear in my previous post, I was saying those things can actually remove dystopian feels. A lot of sci fi, even stuff like Blade Runner, etc paints a future that does not look better than our own. I think that the "Not better than our...

Re: What makes a dystopia?

I hate to say this, Charlee, because your writing is so good, but it does stand out with dystopic elements. Sci Fi and Dystopian are often hand in hand. The Hunger games has loads of cool technology, but it is dystopian because of the world they live in. In general, if the world is in hopelessness, ...
