Re: Self-pubbed author trampled by Amazon

Not sure what his sales were like before the giveaway but I know a lot of authors give the books away for a short time just to get it out there. I'd be a bit peeved too but everything happens for a reason. His book is now in the hands of 5000 plus people who will spread the word if they like it. He...

Re: Best format of introductory blog post?

there are better ways to reach people that take a lot less time. Like twitter and Facebook and Google + and Tumblr I was always under the impression that Twitter/FB/G+/Tumblr were meant as accessories to the core component of the platform, which is the blog, rather than the platform itself. I didn'...

Re: Most efficient mode of outlining?

Thanks, Jen, and everyone else who replied. I'll get another look at Scrivener and Rowling's outline too. The Snowflake system seems kind of mathematical to me (not surprising, considering the developer of both -- the method and the software -- a man by the name of Randall Ingermanson, is a novelist...

Re: Forum Suggestions Box

Hi Mr. Bransford, Is there a way to add what's called a "lo-fi" interface to the forums? My computer is very old and Internet is very slow, and sometimes the pages don't load correctly (I have to "refresh" several times). On some other forums, which I believe run on the same software, they have a "...

Re: Self-pubbed author trampled by Amazon

This is the danger of when a conglomerate has too many pokes in the fire, and a lot of people get burned. Wow, that makes me just double-double boiled and bubbled inside. (Figures, considering it's not long after Halloween.) And yet, it adds more fuel to my anti-Kindle fire, just fanning the ...

Real-world people as models for characters?

Question (I originally asked this in a different format elsewhere , but am sort-of xposting just in case my original Q gets somehow lost in the shuffle). Maybe because I'm one of those who's been "poisoned" by movies, TV and other media, when I'm writing or coming up with a story I tend to have a sp...

Re: What inspired you to write in your genre?

Hollywood and Must-See TV. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but correct me if I'm wrong: I'm a very visual person, and I have the tendency (I guess this might not be a good thing?) to picture my stories as movies, complete with big-name cast. As a result, I have someone in mind when ...

Re: Most efficient mode of outlining?

Rachel - I'm an uber planner. I love spreadsheets and very detailed outlines. J K Rowling's plot grid really was the inspiration for my main method. However you said you're looking for a happy medium. I would personally suggest the snowflake method. I feel like it gives you the flexibility to delve...

Re: How do you interact with your fave authors online?

I know we're all scrambling to try to figure out how to maximize social media as writers, but I'm very curious to know how we're using it as readers. And yet, it seems as though as readers, not a lot of people are accessing the authors through these newer channels, and are still relying on word-of-...

Best format of introductory blog post?

In trying to figure out what my best approach is to the whole social media phenomenon, I've started to wonder what's the best subject for an introductory blog post, i.e. the first ever that you put on the blog -- which is your first entry into the anarchic Coliseum of Internet self-promotion in your...

Re: Social sites for old/slow machines?

Alas, I don't use Twitter or Tumbler, though I'd imagine they are both likely to be heavy JS dependent. Mobile sites may or may not use JavaScript, depending on what they are targeting. Today's "smart" phones can handle some JavaScript, but most sites are likely to use little to no JS, however they...

Re: Social sites for old/slow machines?

Thanks, Collectonian. The laptop I have (not the PC I'm on right now, a desktop with Windows 7) is an old IBM ThinkPad, which doesn't meet the memory specs for XP, which requires a minimum of 64 MB RAM (128 not to run like molasses). I have, I think, 96? Or somewhere in the middle. I'm not technical...

Nomination for blog: Occupy Writers

Dear Mr. Bransford, The Occupy Movement (which started as Occupy Wall Street but has since gained momentum in several other locations in the U.S. and worldwide) has attracted a long list of authors, poets, and other people involved in the publishing world to its cause, championing the interests of t...

Re: How do you interact with your fave authors online?

So that's not your photograph, Charlee? :? I would think if people recognize you from a picture that would give your identity away. An anonymous avatar, I would think, might be a better shield in that regard... No, that's me! I don't mind terribly if people know both Identities, most of my friends ...

Social sites for old/slow machines?

OT rant: This decision-making process about my social media presence has become so painful for me that I've decided to call it S&M. Facebook + Blogging = "flogging." But just like with any sort of fetish, there are people entirely averse to it, and others who really get a kick out of the whole...
