Re: Query: "Griffin's Song" YA Adventure

Thanks to both of you for giving your advice :) I am considering changing her age to fourteen so that the novel covers (almost) one year instead of two, but I don't as of yet know how that will effect the flow so I haven't decided. You were both right, the fiance aspect is minor enough that it could...

Re: Classics vs. YA/Current Fiction in the HS English Classroom

I definitely thing it should be both classics and contemporary fiction. So many books that I read while in high school were classics, and because I had to read them in class, did not enjoy them. If a student is expecting only staid novels where you can only look forward to dissecting prose, they wil...

Re: Query: "Griffin's Song" YA Adventure

After some revisions here is a new summary. I tried to put more plot points in there and I took your revisions into account, Allie :) I hope this one is better! When pirates slaughter fourteen-year-old Sarah Whitman’s parents, she becomes a captive on the deadliest pirate ship of the 18th century, t...

Re: What would you do?

I'd say since you've only got 2 chapters of the other novel written, give this new idea a try. At least write the first two chapters there so you can come back to it later if you feel you should finish the other book first. You don't want to forget the idea! :)

I think I preferred the old query. It had more moments of tension and you got to know the MC better. But if you've been getting negative responses with the old one, by all means edit away! I agree with most of Allie's suggestions.

Re: Revised: QUERY: Moonrise, Epic Fantasy

The Lunar King bargained his daughter away in marriage to end generations of war between the two dynasties of the Skyfall Isles. The King sends his niece Chandi along as handmaid to his daughter. There is a switch in tenses here with no transition. Makes it seem a bit choppy Chandi has two tasks: w...

Re: Our conversations start at 4 a.m. (Adult: Romance)

I was a little confused by the first paragraph because of the jump from his thoughts to talking about a court case. But I absolutely loved the last line. Humorous self deprecation can be funny when well executed, which is was.
I'd like to read more about Emery and Arthur!

Re: TELL ME THIS (formerly REDDO), YA Urban Fantasy new query

I LOVE the revised version. The second you mentioned the "unanswerable question" I felt the urge to read your book. Because now I NEED to know what the question is. Always a plus when you can hook 'em in. There are a couple of words that I would take out, but I think you've got a pretty solid query ...

Re: Query: "Griffin's Song" YA Adventure

Yes, your points absolutely make sense. Just to refine a list of what you mentioned, you suggest I: specify the era and that the fictional setting, indicate conflict as to why the pirate captain wants to keep her, basically redo the second paragraph (which I completely agree with after reading your ...

Re: Query: "Griffin's Song" YA Adventure

So here's the redone version. The word count is in flux currently, so you can negate that. I've been toying with using this as a first sentence instead: "Fourteen-year-old Sarah Whitman has never wanted the life or marriage her parents have planned for her." Dear Agent, When fourteen-year-old Sarah ...
