Re: Fixing Book Rankings

Sheds new light on the subject, Doug. But it's still inexcusable to purposefully harm a writer's career because you programmed your devices poorly. They need to program the devices to recommend (if they keep that feature at all), books in the genre and age group matching the ones you've bought alrea...

You have to special order them direct from Microsoft. Look in the same section where they sell ergonomic keyboards.

My latest release is out, a short story prequel to Children of Sun and Moon. It's $0.99.

Re: Fixing Book Rankings

So, how would you guys feel about a major book distributor...one with its own e-reader, let's put it that way...manually changing book rankings to keep them out of the top 100? Is it ethical? If it financially harms an author who had a title in the top 100, do you think the author should have recou...

Re: Dear Reader - Meet my friend. Exposition...

Hill, as you hint at, there's a reason why outsiders are popular. They give a character that needs an explanation (for example, Vin in the Mistborn series). That said, you can have exposition, just bits at a time, from the POV of the characters. You don't have to explain much. Your readers will fill...

Re: HELP ME!!!

I wouldn't obsess (yeah, I know, coming from me...) about it. It's the rare idea that's never been done before. Most great stories are not blindingly original (if they were, they might be hard to love), but rather the whole package fits together beautifully. The voice of the writer, the personality ...

Re: Separate email accounts for personal and writing ? names?

I don't know how you guys link accounts and things... I think I'm going to keep it simple and have one for personal and one for writing contacts/writing blog (if I get blog in future). I don't do FB or twitter and stuff anyway. MattLarkin: Do you use that writing/editing email account also to attac...

Re: HELP ME!!!

Are you reading Brent Weeks, Hillsy?

I'm not aware of the twist in the exact same way he did it, though mistaken identity or identity stealing is not a new idea. Man In the Iron Mask, for example.

Re: Emotional Overload

You might try conveying some of the emotions through action that illustrates the emotion. Did you ever read the Wicked & Tricksy post I did on why my characters don't cry or say "I love you"? That. Yeah. That was kind of what I was saying. Showing us how he feels, rather than having him analyze his...

Re: Where to Start with Sci-fi

Daniel Abraham (a major fantasy novelist and friend of George R.R. Martin) writes sci-fi under the pen name James A. Corey. I also recommend the full six Dune series books by Frank Herbert. His son also wrote some Dune continuation and spinoff novels. Orson Scott Card does the Ender books, which are...
