Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

Again monsieur, the point is not "to let it go". It is that if the author of something of NPP quality feels that change is still necessary, it certainly isn't beneath an unpublished author to do a bit more editing, no? Certainly, I hear publishers usually demand it. But to address your point: she is...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

Oh! I see now, you're a perfectionist. Perfectionists can't be writers (so it is written), you are doomed. Neither can the mediocre.... Just because something can be improved doesn't mean it HAS to be improved. You ARE kidding, right? Did you even read this out loud? Even the best of the best are c...

Re: synopsis: flight

I think you misunderstand me. I was only suggesting changing it if the novel doesn't get picked up in its current form, and of course this change of genre would require plot and character changes, as well. I am not into the idea of married teenagers. If the genre is changed, the husband could becom...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

That's not the point... Maybe I should have phrased it differently: there is no such thing as good enough; improvement is a constant process. The fact that we, as the writer, likes it is already a given, but we're not the only ones buying the book, are we? If we can't even hold our friends' attentio...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

Question: The parts that you're rewriting—do they feel wrong when you finish editing them? Or do they start to look wrong only after subsequent readings. If the later is the case, you might need to set your MS aside for five or six months and then go back and edit the entire piece. I felt no frustr...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

Hmm... maybe it's just impatience on my part... I get so frustrated with my novel. On some days it feels like it moves too quickly, other days it feels too slow, but I can't seem to enjoy reading it when I'm tired. I remember reading Harry Potter 5 and just couldn't put it down no matter how sleepy ...

Re: Is present tense ever okay?

I find it works for thoughts that sound awkward in the past tense.

For example:
"You need help." has a different connotation than "You needed help."

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

That's an interesting philosophy. I usually only send out 2 queries at a time. I'm still on my first letter, and so far, it's okay (though I'm starting to think it's more interesting than my book) but as I've only sent out 10 so far, it'll probably get old and I'll have to write another one... Since...

Re: How long is too long before sending out a partial or full?

That's unfortunate, but it makes me curious. How many queries have you sent out? And how many times have you been rejected + how many material requests have you gotten?

Re: Words I Can't Stop Using

Ick... too many over used words
Aside from character names, the biggest words are "just", "one", "back", and "time".

Anyone willing to post an image of their wordle picture?

Thanks for wordle.

Re: synopsis: flight

Hey there. I just have a few general points about the excerpt: First of all, I LOVED the premise. It's such an interesting idea and your quality of writing is evidently high. I'm guessing the genre is paranormal romance, and seeing as this is so strong in YA right now, I would suggest exploring the...

undergraduate college student. Leaning towards med school at this point; I'd like to be a doctor someday. I don't really want to write for a living, just to put something on the shelves.

Eh? seriously? To write a query before you finish your editing is already cutting the process short, but to do it before even finishing the manuscript??? I don't know...

Re: What makes a person good?

If you're writing a perfect-world-gone-horribly-wrong story, please excuse the following comments. Forgive the pessimism, but gathering information in such a blunt way could result in idealism. Character flaws make stories. A good person is usually portrayed as doing something bad, and someone bad i...
