Re: OK, how about least favourite characters' names?

I'm just wondering if the name [Bella Swan], in isolation, would bother you? Or is it just in the context of the Twilight books that it annoys you? In the context it bugs me. If the character wasn't supposed to resemble an ugly duckling>beautiful swan, I wouldn't really care. Also, it annoys me tha...

Re: OK, how about least favourite characters' names?

Thanks for responding. I'm so interested in hearing different people's perspectives on these things. I can see that . . . again, I'm saying all this in the context of how great that series really is. It's a great fantasy series, with some expert worldbuilding that goes down smooth, despite its comp...

Re: Does learning the craft of writing impact creativity?

Margo, Polymath, Beethovenfan, everything you've said makes perfect sense. And personally, everything I've learned (and still learning) in relation to the craft of writing has been totally useful and helpful in its own way, after much analysis and interpretation. I guess to go out on a slightly tang...

Does learning the craft of writing impact creativity?

In another topic, (a few other manuscript issues) Polymath raised some interesting points which led me to think about whether or not learning lots about the craft of writing impacts your creativity. Do you think, for instance, it is possible to: * become bogged down in mechanics and not give enough ...

Re: Need some Mojo

Welcome back! I completely understand the needing to take time out to help others and it is most refreshing to re-enter the forumosphere. That was pretty much my life last year. I hope it was a productive time for you both. Re your question, do you perhaps have a favorite part of the plot that might...

Re: OK, how about least favourite characters' names?

Draco Malfoy's just too over the top . . . might as well name the guy Cockroach McEvil. It's just hitting the reader over the head with a sign that says: "You're not allowed to like this person!" It's already bit overbearing to have that character --- an obvious rival to the hero --- constantly und...

Re: A few other manuscript issues

Polymath - such great wisdom, as usual. I guess it just feels like I need to find the right door to open, which might unravel a whole heap of other information hidden behind other doors. My own searches sometimes land me at dead ends. Your help, and everyone else who offers support and guidance in t...

Re: OK, how about least favourite characters' names?

1. Character names with same first and last name initials (Kate Kennedy, Jack Johnson, etc, etc...) 2. Same as above, but the same initials are also used as nicknames, such as KayKay, JayJay, etc, etc... 3. Character names with one or more apostrophes. 4. When the author is giving a foreign first a...

John, how do you feel about an author using their children's names?

Re: A few other manuscript issues

Polymath, I totally agree with your analysis, and it does indeed apply in all aspects of life. I'm not critizing literary agents and if I came across in that light I certainly didn't mean to. Their job is hugely challenging and they have to apply whatever filters they deem appropriate to find author...

Re: A few other manuscript issues

Thanks very much everyone for the extremely valuable advice. And thanks for the great link polymath. Much appreciated. I'm all for keeping things simple and to the point. In my profession for instance, in the past I've been called to on resolve disputes between selection panel members convened to re...

Re: A few other manuscript issues

Good advice! In fact this is usually my comment to others so what an apt reminder. I guess the issues I'm raising are not generally the sort of thing I've seen specified anywhere but come up enough in discussion with others to bother me. Hence seeking others opinions in this wonderfully diverse foru...

A few other manuscript issues

Hi all, Help please! I’m a bit confused about a couple of details when it comes to formatting manuscripts. Excluding the tips Nathan has already provided us with in a previous blog, I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to guide me in the following areas where I've received contradictory advice: 1...
