Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Most indies are dependent on Amazon to an unhealthy degree - often accounting for 80% or 90% of their sales. There are logical reasons for this, but today, I outline some steps that indies can take to diversify a little, so that the next time there is a Big 6 sale, a reporting delay, or a cr*pload o...

Re: Calling All Translators!

Hi Dale, I'm not sure where you are coming from here. Not everyone speaks English, and even out of those that do - most prefer to read in their own language (it takes less effort for one, and affords a more immersive reading experience, which is what we are all after when we pick up a novel). In Spa...

Calling All Translators!

The opening of Amazon Spain on Wednesday and a planned Kindle Store for later this year, as well as widely rumored expansions into France, Italy, and India, has many writers thinking about international markets. In my blog post on Friday, I discussed the opportunities that present themselves in Spai...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Amazon's international roll-out has led some writers to thinking about translating their books. Problem is, if you want to get it done right it can cost thousands of dollars. Scott Nicholson has a very creative solution involving no upfront fees, and profit-sharing instead. Come! Read! It's good! Oh...

Re: My Self-Publishing Experiment - Initial Results.

Thank you very much, Ryan. It certainly hasn't been easy. That huge drop to nearly nothing in my second month was a real blow. And I will have another huge drop this month to deal with (unless some miracle happens in the next two weeks). It requires constant work, and a lot of late nights, but it is...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Amazon has launched in Spain and sources claim a Kindle Store will be open by the end of the year. It won't be easy there for Amazon as Spanish law restricts them to discounting local books by only 5%. However, this could create a huge opportunity for self-publishers who can price as they like. http...

Re: My Self-Publishing Experiment - Initial Results.

Hi Susan, I'm glad you enjoyed the book. For anyone else keeping track of this experiment, the numbers for August are in. The headline is 392 books sold, $870 in revenue. Best month yet by far. However, it's not all rosy. September has seen a HUGE slowdown. But don't worry, I'll post those numbers a...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I finally got round to chewing through last week's AAP figures. We now have numbers for the first 6 months of 2011. And it's the same story we have seen all year: print is in free fall, and e-books continue to surge. Although, this month there was a twist - the normally reliable trade paperback sale...

Re: My Self-Publishing Experiment - Initial Results.

Hi Taylor, I'm sorry, I didn't seem to get a notification that you had posted here. If you go to the book page for If You Go Into The Woods - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YTI01Y - you will see the sample button just under the "Buy" button. They also have a "Look Inside" feature for e-books which see...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

The first truly comprehensive report on the state of the US publishing industry was released last week. Defenders of the status quo were quite pleased with its contents. However, I argue that a closer look spells trouble ahead for the bigger fish. Publishing: Not In Such Bad Shape After All? http://...

July Sales Report

Today I posted the monthly look inside my wallet.

Sales dipped in June, which was a little disappointing, but they increased - dramatically - in July.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Amazon has picked up another self-publisher (following J Carson Black last week) Michael Wallace signed a five-book deal, joining Konrath, Eisler, Black, Crouch, and McBain in the Thomas & Mercer stable. Read the official announcement and a guest post from Michael Wallace on my blog: http://davidgau...

Re: My Self-Publishing Experiment - Initial Results.

Final sales numbers are in (bar Apple, B&N, Sony, Kobo etc. - no idea when I'll get those). Here are the rough tallies: May: 153 (about $70) June: 78 (about $35) July: 255 (about $425) Pretty pleased with the big bump in July, especially after the dip in June. Predominantly down to a new release, th...
