Re: The Incredible Shrinking Novel (aka, What NaNo Taught Me)

I think my novel needs that. I've actually been considering going back and removing all the useless junk in my book. We'll see where that takes me! But now that you've said you can do it, I think I can too. *crosses fingers*

Re: How do terrible books get published?

Even after so long of looking for a writer's group, and having the NaNo group say they wanted to continue, I'm not wanting to go because they're starting to push me into a corner. I get talked over, told to shush, answered for, and walked away from. I feel like I'm not wanted because I'm the oldest...

Re: How do terrible books get published?

The point being, I see this as a terrible book. But look how many don't. I have this book on hold from my library. I haven't read it either, but since so many people are recommending it, I thought I would give it a try. We'll see if we agree or disagree. Oh, and about that book we were discussing e...

Re: How do terrible books get published?

Sommer, I completely agree with you on pretty much everything you said. You can either love or hate a book for varying reasons, but just because you hate the book, does not necessarily mean that the books sucks. Sure it may be poorly written. Sure the characters suck. Sure the plot may be weak. Sure...

Re: History Longshot

I think ancient history is very interesting, but I'm definitely more a student of modern history, particularly the Caribbean, Japan and Europe. My academic work is focused on 18th and 19th century Scotland. But I always love learning more! I agree with you there! Those are all fascinating subjects....

Re: What is it about Norse mythology?

I've also been going to the library for my books recently, because I too am dirt poor. Like Polymath, my town has a small library that is also inter-regional. I can pretty much take a book out from any library in western Mass. In fact, I found a book just yesterday there on Japanese folktales. I'm g...

Re: The Million Word March to Becoming Professional

So far, between my two finished books and numerous WIPs, I have total 379,802 words. That is not including the 50,000 to 60,000 thousand words that haven't made it onto my computer yet. I still have my first story that I wrote laying around. It is horrific literally and figuratively. It was a short ...

Re: What is it about Norse mythology?

Yea, I don't know. When I turn to myths, I tend to go non-fiction. I personally like myths set in the era they were based off of. However, I haven't read too many set in modern times, so I can't really choose one or the other.

Re: What is it about Norse mythology?

Something that occurred to me while reading through this thread (thanks for all the replies, everyone!) was this: What do you think people like to see more, moderns interpretations of mythologies, or tales based off mythologies set in the era said mythologies were prevalent in? Hmm, not sure. Maybe...

The decorations and the movies. The Grinch and Rudolph are my favorite movies.
I also love atmosphere. It just seems that everyone is in a good mood. You can almost feel it in the air.

Re: Commas

I'm a serial comma abuser too. I usually don't notice it in my writing right away, except at work. Usually because my boss or co-worker points them out. So if you see a press release out there riddled with commas, I probably wrote that. J/k. Maybe. I find that personally by inserting ni after every ...

Re: History Longshot

Margo, I want to go get a BA in history, but I find that I am too poor at the moment. One of these days! I don't actually intend on doing anything with said BA, except feed my own insatiable curiosity. Ancient Ireland though, THAT sounds fascinating. I have a book titled 'How the Irish Saved Civiliz...
