Re: Does anyone ever lose that spark?

Constantly! It's why I have a filing cabinet full of half-started pieces. But I find, when I leave them a while and then go back to them, that it will suddenly come to me: I can make this work if I just change x . And then I get a new rush of enthusiasm that usually carries me through. I have proble...

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you

Random facts:

1. I have walked up a volcano.

3. When I was seven I scratched my sister's initials into my dad's bar, to get her into trouble. It didn't work.

4. When I was five I was bilingual. Now I'm not. :(

Thanks Nathan! That was exactly what I needed.

I'm so glad you're still going to be hanging around the forums! I can't even tell you how helpful I've found your site. Everyone here is so welcoming and encouraging, and it's because you've lead by example. Best of luck in all your future endeavours.

Re: Bloody Hell, another synopsis, aaarrrgghh!

Please note I haven't critiqued a synopsis before, so this might not be too helpful: Michael Who is Michael? Where is he from and what does he do? places a Brazilian amethyst on his forehead and nods off to sleep. When he wakes up he can see ghosts and even bizarre creatures from the other side. Wit...

I really like your voice, and I love the idea of the grandmother as a pirate.

Good luck with this one!

Re: Is reading enough to spark creativity?

Reading is great to get a sense of style, but don;t overdo it, because then you start comparing yourself to the authors you love, and you always come up short! The best advice someone gave me was to always carry a notebook. That way, if you see something random that sparks an idea, jot it down. I ha...

Dont over think it, EMC.

Just get the plot down, and worry about the rest in editing.
Force it into submission!

Re: Contacting an agent after submitting a full

Thanks for your advice guys! I will definitely leave it a few weeks before enquiring.

Gargh. It's like high school dating. You don't want to be appear to desperate, too casual, too disinterested, or too slutty, and deep down you just want them to like you!

Re: How to know you're not a writer?

Sierra, I hope you're feeling more positive since this thread started. I've been there. We've all been there. Sometimes it sucks. Hell, most times it sucks. Trying to write professionally is taking the one thing you really love, and stomping on it repeatedly. And then sending it out to agents and pu...

Contacting an agent after submitting a full

Hi guys, I'm after a bit of advice. I queried an agent who requested the full manuscript - terrifying! - and said to allow six to eight weeks for a response. In two days it will be exactly eight weeks (but who's obsessively counting, right?) and I've realised I've got no idea how to approach the age...

Re: On the friskiness of language

Do any of you speak a non-English language, and does it influence your English-language writings? I grew up in Papua New Guinea. As a kid I was fluent in Tok Pisin, which was originally the pidgin English spoken there, but is now recognised as a distinct language. It's disappointing that I've forgo...

Re: On the friskiness of language

I love Stephen Fry. I want to marry his brain!

I'm currently reading An Ode Less Travelled, and really enjoying it. I finally know what Iambic Pentameter is, after bluffing my way through poetry at university.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I am new at this blog stuff. So far I have one follower (and you all know it's my best friend, right?) My blog was going to be all about the process of writing, but there are a lot of other, better blogs out there for that. So it's now a bit about writing, a bit about whatever I'm thinking about, an...

Re: Do you listen to music? What motivates your muse?

I actually have different playlists for different characters. Everyone gets a song that has something to do with their mood or their situation. Normally I'll listen to it before I start writing, while I'm checking emails or something, just to get into the mindset. While I'm actually writing, anythin...
